finally got a chance to take the grfx card out. I didn't realize that meant I couldn't output via the dock so this can't be a permanent solution. However, if this does work and the black screens stop, I may just try a new grfx card as I think that would be a good assumption. Of course it will work for over a week without the issue then start having it constantly multiple times a day.

You can still use VGA output without a GPU installed. (Might be helpful in the interim if your display supports VGA.)

I wish I could, but my monitor only accepts DP and HDMI. I ordered an m6100 to put in it and it should hopefully be here in 2 days. For now I will just deal with it. The cool thing is I was about to replace the laptop because it doesn't do 4k, but I think the m6100 will do 4k (I have an LG multiclient monitor which will do either 1 4k or act like 4 1080p screens. I normally use it like the latter).

Heck, even my m4600 will do 4k (albeit at 30hz).

I switched from a Quadro 4000m to an AMD Firepro M6100 with no problems. Only had to uninstall/install certain drivers, but the heat sink worked just fine for both graphics cards.

I'm guessing the Radeon HD 8950 is the consumer version of the m6100 (not sure why Windows is seeing it as that). Either way, it's not doing 4k which I find weird because my m4600 with a FirePro m5950 does 4k just fine (I expected both to be limited to 30hz).

Anyone know how I can get the FirePro m6100/Radeon HD 8950 to output in 4k?

Ok, installed the newest beta drivers and it shows as an M6100. I also figured out the 4k issue. Apparently it doesn't like using an DP -> HDMI cable for some reason (or at least the one I have). I have the m4600 using the only DP on my monitor (LG 43mu79 multi client monitor). When I hooked the m6600 to the DP, it worked like a champ. Though it could be the docks or cables, but the same cables work with an HP laptop from work and it does 4k just fine.

Oh well, so far no black outs, but I will have to monitor it. I'm just happy to not have to buy a new laptop and can continue to use my monitor via DP -> HDMI even if it doesn't do 4k right now.

Thanks all for the help! :)

    Tried connecting an external monitor?

    A related question:

_IS_ The K4000M an upgrade from the M6100? I am trying to figure out if there is an affordable (gaming) upgrade on my rig, I went from M8900 to K4000M with no issue but now I see people talking about M290X, 7970M and others. Various benchmark sites "say" the M6100 should actually be better for gaming than the K4000M???

It seems like the M290X is the "top" option, but requires some weird intervention regarding fans and such. What's the best card (for gaming) that more or less "works right"? I wish we had some kind of a wiki or something for this data, instead of a 700 page thread with a mediocre search function.

I think the W7170m might be the best option, will have to confirm of course. Its the best option available on AMD with LVDS support, and nvidia its much like the m4600, beyond the stock options its scarce to nill support.
