I just installed an R9 m290x aka HD 8970m in my Dell precision M6600. The GPU came from and alienware system, no flashing just installed and good to go. The only issue is in bios it says video card unknown however it works fine. Scoring over 5000 in 3dmark firestrike normal.

Oh need to add that the xbracket did not work from alienware system. I had to reuse one from and old quadro. I bent the legs slightly and just make sure the black insulator is still on it, be careful cause it sits on some capacitors on the back of the gpu. If anyone wants to see benchmark scores i can provide them.

Looks good. Was this before or after OC? I see that valuxin has already modded the M290X vBIOS.

I thought everyone was getting black screens when trying to install the R9 M290X on the M6600.

Did you get the one with the green or black PCB? (dontt even know if they are different)

EDIT: Or the CLEVO one with the light blue color

That's the ebay link to the card i got and that was before the bios mod. Valuxin mod is good for increasing the power limit however you cant underclock nor overclock at all. One thing about these Precision laptops and adding unsupported gpu's is due to what screen connector you have either edp or lvds. In either case you can just flash the gpu firmware to match. I am currently doing that for an hp zbook 17".

I purchased an R9 m290x 4GB from ebay for $200 that was an Alienware pull.
Unfortunately the card had a visible "scar" from improper removal that had cut 3 visible traces.
While that card was being returned I found a MSI 7970M 2GB for only $125 shipped!
That was another headaches but I was able to flash it to a Dell 7970m vBios with a pomona clip and a FlashCatUSB SPI Flasher.
Its good to know that the R9 m290x works and I am not too bummed out as the 7970m and R9 m290x (8970m) are the same cards other than the 8970m having double the memory.

My trusty m6600 has finally died on me, started glitching today. I've run dell epsa, and am getting video card errors (Video memory - Video memory integrity test discrepanc) so it looks like I will have to replace gpu or spend on a new notebook.

Having read through the last few posts looks like I will try the m6100. 7970m is too expensive for me on eBay.

Spoke too soon! M6100 is the same price for me in the UK as the 7970m. May need to get a new laptop :(
