Thanks @imrazor, then I will probably stick to the gtx680m as my version has 3000M inside and I am afraid of the NVidia vs AMD X-bracket incompatibility and the cooling system possible issues.
Unfortunately, the 680ms are still quite expensive(cheapest found fro 290USD incl. shipping). The 7XX are much cheaper as well as the AMD FirePro M6100.
I currently want to decomission my Asus G74SX (i7 2360QM/NV gtx 560m/16GB RAM) and make the M6600 my primary machine for VMs and occasional gameplay. I got the M6600 for free and it's possible to upgrade it with the newer and more powerful GPU, so I decided to make the switch. The 680m is much more powerful than the 560m so I think it's worth it.
Do you think the switch from NV 3000M to Firepro M6100 will be an issue? I think I have read, that at least I need the proper X-bracket, but not sure about the rest.

On m6600 amd and nvidia heatsinks are the same, only xbracket is different. You need to rearange thermal pads and thats it.

Thanks @darkydark can you please advice me, which X-bracket should I look for on E-Bay, that will fit the M6100 Fire Pro?
Thermal pads are ok, I have some spare pads at home, that should not be a problem.

Any AMD bracket should be fine. Most firepros come with them.

Quite some time ago (a few months now) I posted that after updating my M6600 with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update the machine became unusable and I had to roll back to before the update and defer any future updates.

That was until yesterday, when my machine downloaded the Anniversary Update again and installed it. Still some issues with the touchpad and both Bluetooth mouse and USB mouse and frequent crashes.

I updated to the very latest NVidia drivers and noticed still the same problems so I decided to check to see if the new Creators Update works any better. After downloading and installing that, I can confirm that my machine is working perfectly (so far) and seems to be very stable. I have used it for almost 24 hours without a single glitch. In fact it may be working better, at least cooler as it does not seem hot and the fan is kicking in less - but that may just be my imagination.

So if like me, you had problems with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update you may want to give the Creators Update a try.

    Good luck!

So finally I managed to buy a Used Alienware GTX 680m card without the X-Bracket. I should be fine, as the current 3000M should have the same X-bracket on it.
I came across a minor issue with the Brightness control running W10 Creators update, but fixed it by editing registry. I can post details if anyone is interested.
Also I will add my experience as soon as the card arrives and I have it mounted.

    Hello Guys

So my firepro m8900 finally died (fried during rendering video in adobe) on my M6600 (thank god I can use basic drivers to not use the card)

I am looking to get a list of the BEST upgrades I can do that don't require me to get extra parts besides the video cards themselves.

I wanted the 7970M but most people experience black screens, so I'm guessing its not compatible?

    How about the Firepro 6100?

I heard the 680M is compatible?

Please give me a list of proven compatible cards, I am looking to buy the part ASAP.

    Thanks!

FirePro M6100 should be cheapest as you already have the xbracket from M8900. Other compatible cards are 675M, 670M, 670MX and so on. 700 series and newer will not work .

While Nvidia upgrade route seems to dead-end at the 6xx series, there's more promise on the AMD side. I have found posts on two different sites talking about the Dell/Alienware R9 M290x:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDHelp/comments/4qh7dv/m290x_in_dell_precision_m6600/
    https://translate.google.com/transl....51nb.com/thread-1672178-1-1.html&prev=search

Both mention that the card is identified as an HD 8970M in Windows, which is similar to but slightly older than the M290x. Architecturally, the M290x is closer to the M6100 than Maxwell/Kepler is to the Fermi-based cards compatible with the M6600. Performance should be at least 20% higher than the M6100, with at least an equal rise in power consumption.

If anyone has money to burn, maybe even try the W7170 from the Precision 7710? I assume it won't work for multiple reasons.

To all Windows 10 users, that have NVidia cards. I was struggling with rather low FPS in some games.
Interestingly I have found, that when only using External LCD, the FPS in all games was high, as it should be.
I was reading many many forums to find a solution. However, all what I found was related to games not using the NV card at all.

This case is different. Here is what resolved all the issues:
    1. Disable Game DVR in the XBOX App (you have to sign in with MS account to be able to do that)
    2. Disable Game Bar and all In-Game recording options

    Good luck.
