Wow - long thread..... Anyhow I was able to pick the following up for $550:

I was looking to upgrade to windows 10. From what I have read it look fairly painless even though Dell indicates this system is not verified for it. Are there any specific issues I should look out for driver wise? I was also looking for a docking station that would allow me to run 2 2560x1440 monitors. I am assuming the PRO2X will work for this:

Where did you get it from?

 

PR02X will allow you to drive the two displays if they are attached via DisplayPort.

 

you may need to do a regedit so brightness control work,
the card reader driver installation can be a mess, kind of. but if you upgrade from 7 with the driver, it will be fine.

 

Ebay. The seller explicitly stated the warranty transfer and I was able to verify the service tag for the warranty end date so I know I am covered via ebay/paypal buyer protection if the warranty does not transfer properly.

 

Thanks - Its amazing how cheap these laptops are with the m6100 in them. I know they are a couple generations old but they still perform very well. Given the build quality, they are a tremendous value.

Hi guys. I'm considering the m6600 but I have a few questions:
How often do they have the dual screen problem (external displa not working via HDMI/DP)
Any other defects I should be aware of?

I have to choose between an i7-2860QM with Quadro 3000m and 1600x900 screen and an i7-2630QM with 4000m and a FullHD screen. The latter comes without warranty while the other has 6 months.
I'm also considering an m6800 from the UK Dell Outlet that costs a bit more (500 euro) and only has the 4610M dual core and ATi m6100 but it's an m6800 so it should be more futire prood I guess...
I don't think I need CUDA for any of the programs I'm using. Actually the Video card is not so important most of the time in CAD - it helps, but any of them does the job, as long it has pro drivers.
The CPU, on the other hand is quite stressed most of the time (3d rendering, Photoshop)

Speaking of video cards - do you know if the m6600 is compatible with the k3100 generation of cards?

 

Id take one from outlet due to warranty and then just het 2720qm down the road.

Nevermind, just opened up the outlet page and it seems they have sold the m6800 - it was a good deal, too bad I was slow...

Seems I have to choose between 3000m with 2860QM and 900p screen and the 3000m with 2630QM and 4000m with Full HD screen. I feel like the 900p screen will not be sufficent for when I'm using the machine without an external monitor (not so often) so I'm more incined to spring for the 1080p machine, even if it has no warranty vs 6 months on the other. Those refurb companies don't offer much of a warranty anyway - in case of an issue they'll probably patch up the MB so it can somehow live through the 6 months warranty period...
