My m6600 came with the ATI Firepro M8900 which is quite good.

I am wondering however if I am able to upgrade it to a gpu with more memory
and a little better performance and if so ...

will the nVidia Quadro 4000M or the Nvidia Quadro 5010M work if I buy and plug straight in?

    Thanks
    C

nVidia card are plug and play, but you need to move the thermal pad around. Amd and nvidia card use the same heatsink on the m6600.

Not sure if you will see much performance gain though, if you are getting 4000M or 5010M. What application do you use?

    Thanks baii for your answer.

I use Vue Infinite, Mandelbulb, Sony Vegas for video and other heavy rendering softwares,

Depending on what technology your software use 4000m could be a downgrade. Afaik sony vegas uses open cl so possible upgrade would be firepro m6100 which should be supported by m6600 i actuallly have one incoming as my m8900 died recently. Tech shoupd be here next week with it so if anyone is interested in some benchmarks post here and i will do my best to run them.

    Thanks darkydark for that information.

Are you going to try to install that m6100 in a m6600 ? I'd be interested to know if it works for you.

Will flashing my M8900 to 6970M garner any benefits? I'm already using Radeon HD drivers instead of FirePro.

Its plug and play. Dell even sent me a new heatsink altho its exactly the same as the old one. I think it was due to fact that new one had thermal pads on it and there were none on gpu.
    Stock 3d mark 11 for m6100 is 5600, my old m8900 was around 3000, compared to quadro 4000m - stock 2200 (475/1200) overclocked to 620/1400 around 3200.

I'm actually quite surprised with 3d mark score seeing 770m's on stock get around 5000.

If any1 wants some more tests feel free to say which ones and i will run em.

There is none, at least it wasnt in my case.

Room temp is around 21.5c. Dont know for idles yet as im playing lol atm and temp is hoowering under 60. Once i fire up world of tanks which is most unoptimised game ever and really stresses gpu will report proper load. Also borderlands 2 max temp was 66.

Running on ultra preset and cpu is constantly in high turbo. Around 2.9ghz temps are around 60ish for cpu.

Mine hovers around 80ish for the core 83 for Memory and 87-90 for the Shader in a 27-29 room temp. Wonder if thats normal. This is while playing Metro LL or BF4.
