    I'm beginning to wonder if it was reimaged by Dell, simply because a factory image doesn't have AHCI drivers in the IDE ATA/ATAPI controlers - usually IIRC it is under a SATA devices node in device manager. But maybe they have both - it has been a long time as my factory image is long gone. Try it for awhile and if need be then reimage it clean.

    I think the Dell tech was just speculating, unless corrupt factory images are a documented "known issue."

    As you reinstall your application programs, if you check between each install and the problem returns (which would likely be some linked process that does not close properly), then you can contact the developer for a solution. Worst case scenario, you can revert back to a restore point.

    Otherwise, if all your programs install without a hitch, I say case closed :)

    I am slowly reinstalling and carefully checking after each install.

    One thing I am concerned about, but I am not sure if it means anything is one line in the registry.

    The Dell Tech gave me this link:

    Disable/Enable Balloon Tips in Windows 7 - WinMatrix

    That link suggests a change in the registry and the Dell tech guy suggested that I make this change:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "TaskbarNoNotification"=dword:00000001

    My entry is not even close to that line. The entry in my registry stops at \Policies\ and I wonder if that entry might corrupted.

    I wasn't sure how to make that change nor was I comfortable making registry changes.

    So for now I am not yet to the point that I am not completely comfortable with the factory image or my restore.

    Thanks for the link to the reimaging thread but it appears the "msft.digital.rivercontent.net" site mentioned in that thread is no longer working. If you can connect to it let me know.

    Yes it is.

    You should get a popup at the bottom of your browser, click save or save as. Don't change the file name.

    Select the link for your version with the laptop. You'll also need the Download tool to burn it.

    Edit: BTW, it is the latest from Msft, SP1-U.

    Also can you post your exact config - earlier you said it did have fingerprint reader. You'll need different driver if none. I'll be updating the drivers section with the other drivers and will put in links. I'm currently updating the newer ones slowly on my machines.
