I was using two usb devices to test each of the usb ports. One is a 500 gb seagate FreeAgent Goflex and the other is a 32 gig thumb drive usb 3.0 f108 made by Team Group, Inc located in Taiwan and sold by newegg.

I have used these same devices on an xps m1530, xps 8500, and an optiplex 380. I have had both devices for about a year now.

    Kallias:

I would suggest first doing what Scott_RC said with regards to the BIOS, but you may have to switch back to RAID On if it won't boot with AHCI enabled.

You're not trying to eject that device shown in my earlier picture right? that's for fingerprint reader.

    Have no raid
    and no finger print reader.

The image of the USB device I attach always shows up in the usb icon and when I eject the device the image disappears from the usb icon but no safe to remove balloon message shows up.

Ok I will do that. I did run the complete diagnostics earlier and no issues report.

Would you advise running the short version in exactly the steps you mention?

    Thanks

This sounds like just some windows setting or malfunction.

After resetting the BIOS I wouldn't know where to begin next for something like that. Maybe uninstall USB drivers, Chipset driver, then reinstall. Reinstall software for device and make sure it's for windows 7.

If you want to reimage - you can go here, see post 1, 2, 3

USB 2.0 ports can be tested (voltage and data transfer) with a loopback plug like this: PassMark Software - USB 2.0 Loopback Plugs and USB Test Software

Passmark is developing a loopback plug for USB 3.0 ports (see thread for updates): USB 3.0 Loopback? - Page 3

A voltage only tester is available: USBcheck - FAQ

Or you can build a voltage only tester: USB tester

If a USB mouse and keyboard function properly, then the port hardware is likely alright. If other devices do not function, then it may be a software - driver - problem.

USB device drivers that are bundled with Windows and install automatically, rarely cause problems.

But 3rd-party USB drivers often have to be installed a certain way, per the manufacturer's instructions. If the correct procedure is not followed, the registry may become corrupt. Sometimes a manual uninstall procedure can be used to correct registry errors.

And even if two USB devices are identical, they each have to be installed separately, because each device is listed individually in the registry (by a unique identifier, like the serial number).

Ok Scott I did exactly the steps you suggested including running a short version of the hardware tests. There were no problems reported in the hardware.

In the last step when I did set SATA to AHCI. SATA was set on Raid, that must be a factory default. But I am not sure what it was before.

I checked the usb devices I am using and still no balloon message.

Should I leave the AHCI on instead of the RAID option? It appeared to shut some at least one port.

Thank you for helping. Willing to try anything else.

I am thinking about something along those lines. I did create a "Repair Disc Windows 7 64 bit" disc, an option from the control panel.

I booted it and looked at the system restore options there. It gave me a lot more restore points than did the restore options I looked at from running "system restore" in start menu line. Dont know why that is.

It has restore points almost hour by hour as I was installing software my first day with the computer, yesterday.

Looks like I could go back to the first installation.

Wondering if I should try that.

I missed your first sentence about a windows setting or a malfunction. One of the techs gave me this link:

Disable/Enable Balloon Tips in Windows 7 - WinMatrix

It gives two options and one option is modifying the registry. I checked the registry and compared my settings with the setting recommended in that link and there was a couple of levels missing in my registry so I could not make those changes.

Disabling/enabling the balloon option is pretty easier to do when you know where to look. The balloon option was enabled when I check it.

So it does appear that the registry might possibly be corrupted at that point in the line. But I am not sure.

I am really uncomfortable with registry changes myself.

In step 1), did you select Eject and Safely Remove Hardware before disconnecting?

In step 2), did it say format drive or repair drive errors?

In step 3), were you testing a WD drive; otherwise, utility may not be accurate?
