I use this for Win7 64 Intel Chipset hard-drive installer and Intel Rapid Storage Technology hard-drive installer.

After verifying that, maybe use diskpart clean all, then full format command on the problem drive.

Edit: Forgot to tell you to make a partition of size after cleaning but before formatting.

    Hello...thanks for the assistance.

The problem is across all usb ports both 2.0 and 3.0.

One of the Dell TS people provided a link to the Renesas driver. I downloaded and installed it, but it did not resolve the issue. However I did not use the -overall command when installing. Do you think that would have made a difference?

Make sure your installed USB controllers look similar to the pic below and all are functioning properly in their respective properties tab.

Mine looks exactly like that! And in the properties tabs, all are working!

Another thing I just noticed is that when windows explorer is open to the contents of the usb drive and I attempt to eject it, no warning message comes up that says device in use. Instead it closes the windows explorer window without warning and appears to eject the drive. That is something I just discovered. Makes me wonder if data could be lost if the device is really busy.

Thanks for taking the time and effort for the photo. I appreciate that.

The BIOS is A12 and the image is still factory. One dell TS thought the factory image might be corrupted, hence the suggestion to reinstall the OS and drivers.

Turn the system OFF, then back ON and hit F2 to enter the BIOS.

Reset to the factory defaults and save.

Restart the system and now immediately hit F12.

Choose the last option - system diagnostics.

Allow the system to check your hardware [short test is about 7 minutes long] and see if any errors pop up.

If no errors are found, go back to the BIOS and just make sure your SATA is set to AHCI before restarting the system one last time and allowing it to boot into Windows.

    Report your findings.

scott - can ahci be applied to a factory image? If I remember, it won't boot.

I did run the complete diagnostic tests this morning...no problems were detected.
