Scott, I think there may be some discrepancies in actual tests and the paper.

I've used 16GB(4x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz Kingston PnP dimms and they all ran at 933(xDDR).

That's only for the 2720QM and above though, the 2630QM and the 2670QM only support up to PnP 1600MHz RAM, not the 1866.

So I think with Kingston PnP RAM, you can achieve speeds above what the manufacturer(Intel) states.

Interesting. I will look into this as the 2600 series quad cores are spec'd @ 1066/1333, not up 1600MHz as well.

Nice one I think I will take your advice. A couple of questions, my Bios on bootup says A07 so is this the latest as in is the latest A07 on the Dell Website. Also I have 3 disks in my box Reinstallation DVD (does this include all the drivers?), Resource Media (whats is it) and Worry Free Business Security services (I assume this is AV bloatware). I made and Image of my system with Acronis 2012. If I restore the image after a reinstall will it write the problems of the registry back again? If so I suppose I will have to reinstall the apps.
Oh one last thing I have a warning sheet in the box about 512e HDDs. How do I know if I have one of these and do you know if I have to carry out a special procedure to reinstall?
I have just run the detection tool for this and I do have a 512e. It say's it is misaligned (I think) would this be causing my problem?

I have similar questions. I have a new M6600 on the way. I will be changing the HDD right off and putting in a 480GB Crucial Force GT SSD. I have ordered all the same disks that badgerballs apparently has. Is one of these disks equivalent to an OEM Windows 7 installation disk so that I can install from scratch and use the Product Code that is printed on the machine or ?

Dell recommends not using the drivers on the drivers disk, but rather download the latest ones from Dell. This makes good sense.

Rather, I'd download directly from the respective website.

I'll post some links to the most recent drivers in a few hours for help.

Q: Does the M8900 model M6600 allow the dGPU to be disabled in the bios, effectively leaving the iGPU as the primary device and so gives better battery life?

No. The BIOS either enables both iGPU and the dGPU, or just the dGPU.

There are no options therefore, for the M8900 card to use optimus like features, just powerplay.

So with the iGPU+dGPU set as active in the bios, is the iGPU the primary bootup video device? If so, you could simply disable the dGPU in device manager then to ensure maximum battery life. Can even be automated using devcon so could have a dGPU on/off script on the desktop.

I guess the question there is, what happens when you disable the M8900 in Device manager? Does it revert to using the iGPU? That's how the iGPU+HD4530M switchable graphics on a DV4-2000 worked.

The Dell system restore disc is a generic OEM DVD that is bootable and will reinstall Windows 7 for you - no drivers or bloatware. As Ryan states, the latest drivers should be downloaded from the Dell site directly although it seems I cannot connect to the Dell software servers at the moment. In regards to the BIOS, A07 = 07 - they are one in the same.

Yes, your backup image will negate all your work and just restore the corrupted data. So, don't do it. If you want a M6600 factory disc image in Acronis True Image .tib format, let me know. It is 21GB in size, but I can upload it to my server and give you private access.

I have not heard or read anything about the 512e warning. I will look into it, but there are utilities avilable to test the drive integrity.
