2 because RAID could get screwy with different HD read/write rates.

    HD1 and HD2 are both SATA 6Gb.
I test that on my M6600 with two SSD, both SATA6Gb (Vertex 3 240GB & Vertex 3 Agility 120GB (just for doing a firmware upgrade, it was in SATA6Gb))

The mSATA port should be in SATAII, due to the limitation of the curent chipset.

Lets all cross our fingers that the IPS display comes out this week... It is the end of September after all.

The eSata port on the Dells do work. They don't support the eSata port multiplier function.

This is not just a Dell thing. It is the same on HP, Sony, and Lenovo. Any current Intel chipset will not currently support port multipliers. Macs don't even have eSata ports.

Intel has posted to a couple of support forums that they may be able to enable port multipliers to work through a future version of their Rapid Storage Technology software.

I challenge you to find any current laptop that does support port multipliers and has an Intel chipset.

You are free to describe the eSata issue however you would like. I do think it is misleading to say that the eSata port does not work at all. It does work with most devices. Unfortunately if a device specifically requires port multipliers, it will not be supported and you will have to use an add in card. I know you are frustrated with this, just make sure the frustration is pointed in the right direction.

The way I see it, Dell and every other manufacturer is going to have to wait for Intel to release software to enable port multiplication on the eSata port. Intel does not seem eager to get this done quickly.

If your external hard drive has more than one physical drive in it, make sure it has a built in port multiplier. Then it will work just fine. I have a couple of drives that work very well.

If you do find any current generation laptops that support port multiplication, please let us know. It would mean they added in a 3rd party controller to the motherboard to get it to work.

Since an add in eSata card works why does Dell (and others) not integrate such a solution to their high-end mobile workstations? This problem has been around since the M6400.

Because they use the Intel chipset in the machine. The chipset includes the Serial ATA controller chip. Intel says that the hardware is fully compliant with the eSATA spec. For whatever reason they have not enabled port multiplication.

This is the same with HP, Lenovo, Sony, and Dell. It sucks.

Yes but it is not available in US. Outstanding product eSata/USB 3 combo.
Worked first time in M6600 and E6320 both running Win7.
