I work for myself and 4 agencies, and I work in the office of the agencies whilst on their jobs. Initially I had a desktop in each one which sucked. DTR = portable office for me.

Oh I got my M6600 and opened an owners thread.

You've got a superlative display in the 27" imac, so you are forgiven for not getting the IPS on the M6600 ;) . I'd be getting the M4600/Precision/W520 as my primary machine with no external monitor (though the idea is starting to put thoughts into my head ... ), so I'm looking for the best display possible. Without sacrificing the family jewels.
I'm zeroing in on the Precision and the EliteBook options. I'm a little tired of the drab Thinkpad black case, too. I'm liking what I hear about both the other machines, ruggedness, durability, fit and finish, etc. Lenovo's are starting to get a little chinsey if you ask me.
Re your W520, are you saying that on the onboard graphics you cannot use an external monitor?? That can't be true.
And the SSD performance, you think it was "a fault" .... of what? the SSD unit itself? software/firmware/bios?? I'm looking to get an SSD as my primary drive on my next machine, and if they are a problem on W520s the final choice will probably not include one of them.

The W520 only outputted on the VGA port when in INTEL only mode not the DP.

The SSD in the W520 WEI'd at 7.4 and in event log had loads of controller errors and was quite unstable. Other people have had issues in the W520 owners threads with specific SSD's.

    The M6600 >>>>> W520 in my opinion

    Hi

it seems as if optimus may even save battery live if a 3d-App (cad) is open but not used (background):

"How Optimus Reacts: Optimus recognizes that a game has launched and appropriately enables the GPU for the highest performance. Should the game be paused for an extended period of time, the GPU will be shutdown to conserve power until the game resumes playing."

    Page 20 of
    http://www.nvidia.de/object/LO_optimus_whitepapers_de.html

    Could anyone confirm this?

    Best regards

    Anyone, please?

If outputting DD5.1 is not possible, then perhaps some evidence that the 2-channel only audio in the Precisions is of a higher quality that the surround sound from consumerish laptops?

If you're using any decent headphones or even sub $300 speakers, stereo audio is much better than the emulated surround sound stuff that is marketed for those products. Don't think that the more channels you have that it is necessarily better than a stereo set.

Absolutely - I'm an audiophile you know :)

That said, media creation is one of the "professional" applications that the Precisions are targeted for. So, would you care to provide some links that would show the evidence of the audio being actually of superior quality, even if only 2-channel?

PS I am using Vegas Pro NLE, and have been creating high quality, true (as opposed to emulated) 5.1 audio for my production successfully using an XPS...

I just sent back my Lenovo W520 so I can order up a M4600. Hopefully I'm making the right decision. That IPS screen had better be good because the FHD screen on the W520 was the best screen I've seen on a 15".

why did you send it back? im somewhat torn between the W520 and the M4600, problem with the W520 is i really miss a proper backlit keyboard. but otherwise id prefer the W520 for its non-offset keyboard and touchpad...

I sent it back because I want IPS, and a "true" backlit keyboard. I'm terribly lazy and turning on the ThinkLight or whatever it's called was a pain since it wouldn't turn off by itself. If the Dell is junk I can still order another W520.
