Any good util to control the speed of fans? I just want to see when they kick in and at what speed. I have noticed that if i Use ultra performance and full load, my m4800 battery would inevitably heat up on discharge , but then if you plug back the cord it gets slightly hotter and starts flashing orange battery indicator. I believe its overheating indicator as it starts charging normally when gets cooler.

Hmm, I was under the impression that the blinking orange battery was an indicator that your battery level is below a certain threshold (10% on mine, I think).

I did the math, and on a pure price/performance curve, the M4800 comes out ahead of everything else on the market. So, it looks like I'll be grabbing one for my little CAD/CAM design consulting startup, despite my objections to Dell products in general.

Just two quickies: Can anyone who's got one with the FirePro M5100 do me a solid and benchmark it on PassMark? Everything I've seen points to the fact that it is as good or better than the K2100m at a lower price point, but I'd really like to see *some* kind of hard proof, instead of just the inferences I've been drawing.

Secondly, Dell is currently selling a premade M4800 with an i7-4800MQ, FHD, M5100, and the other things are irrelevant because you know I'm going to upgrade the parts myself after reciept for $1489 USD. Should I jump on that now, or hold off until I can get one off of Outlet?

Edit: Hmm. Maybe I should hold off... It looks like four months in, and Dell still doesn't have a fix for the crashy-crashy. I dunno. Is this only a problem with the Quadro cards, or is it endemic to the FirePro? I'm seeing a lot of reports on QHD + Quadro, but not as many for FirePro.

So I've had the 4800 now for a week. I got it with the fhd screen, AMD graphics, 256gb ssd, and I added a bigger msata ssd second drive myself. With 32gb of ram, it's pretty awesome. It's been very quiet, but pumps out a lot of heat from the vents. The screen does have the screen door thing going, but I don't really notice it anymore. I will keep it. I just didn't want the scaling hassles of the qhd for what I do. I think the build quality is great, keyboard is stiff, nothing bends, finishes feel nice. Quality machine. Overall, very happy. And I wish I could help, but I have no idea how to benchmark things to help you out.

I have had about 4 blue screens of death, always when I walk away, so I haven't been able to pinpoint the issue yet. I know there was talk on here about it but I haven't had the patience to go through 77 pages to read up on it yet. A bit discouraging on a new machine, but I am hoping a driver issue and easy fix.

I checked again, nothing like that in the BIOS.

There has to be something that allows me to control the timeout, it's annoying to have it go off every few seconds when I don't do anything, I vaguely remember something about a keyboard utility for M4600/M4700, I can't find anything like that for M4800.

that is correct... but what happens is if you quick-discharge=gets hot, then if you plug in the cord, it starts flashing with code: 2 short orange followed by one orange. as far as I remember... I desided not to risk it and just took battery out waited when it got cooler then plugged it in and orange light was gone. knowing Li-ons... lol It may blow up !!! I think it wasn't designed to be run down in 1 hour in a straight load. I pushed both GFX and CPU by playing BF4 HD on High and playing video on external (unplugged)

Yeah, I checked last night too and didn't see it. My mistake, sorry about that. Maybe it was in one of the older bioses and was removed? If that's the case, A04 would be the one to check.

My m4800 is my first laptop ever and I have a quick question. For now I did not move from my desk to work with the laptop, so I would like to know if it's good to always have the laptop plugged on the AC. Is it a good thing time to time to work only on battery to discharge it and recharge it again?
By the way I've bought on eBay a Dell E Port Plus replicator (PR02X) with the 240 Watt brick and a Dell E-Series Laptop stand and it's very useful with the m4800.
    Thanks for any advices!
