I have the model with the AMD FirePro M5100. I can manually switch from discrete to integrated to increase the battery life but there are nagging issues with resuming from the suspend state. I had to re-enable the discrete GPU before going into suspend (this can be automated) but even then about a quarter of the time I couldn't get it to resume properly. Everything works fine if I either disable Optimus/Enduro in the BIOS and run things solely off the discrete card or run with the discrete card physically removed (there isn't an option in the BIOS to disable the discrete GPU).

Anyway, it is sort of ironic given I didn't get the QHD+ model due to the lack of Enduro support. The suspend problem is probably fixable but I haven't spent the time yet and have been running solely off the discrete card.

Also, as noted you do lose HDMI (and probably DP) without the discrete GPU.

I am extremely happy with the replacement screen. Setting aside the mounting options I don't know if you can find an IPS screen with compatible pin socket connections (40-pin vs 50-pin IPS).

    m4800 a06 bios 256gb ssd 16gb RAM

Dell power management software as it came out of the box

Mixed use coding/testing against virtualbox vm. Also running ms office. Avg 8 hrs a day approx. Hardly tickled full potential of this machine in terms of processing power.

Ran into problem with 1550 card connecting to my router at home ok but losing internet (whilst staying attached to wap) at work - anywhere from 1 minute to 10. Router at home is Broadcom; not sure about work. There is thread elsewhere on this and most people ditching 1550 for intel card (which is what I am going to do).

No bsod been running since start Jan.

But 2 mysterious freezes which required reboot.

    1. First when in WebStorm ide on mains. I put this down to fact was just expecting intelliprompt to appear and possible bug in software.

    2. Couple of weeks later when doing nothing but staring into space. Running on battery with about 50% charge (judging from task tray icon when it happened).

Looking at history here and the spiceworks thread seems pretty good but afraid its shaken my confidence a bit and wouldn't recommend to co workers.

Yes didn't really think about that one. I find the 40 pin connector rare on IPS displays as you say most of them are 30. But I found one a glossy one, a AH-IPS with quite extreme contrast ration 800:1 LP156WF4-SLC1 Datasheet download - Panelook.com

Do most of the 40 pin connectors have the same layout, might I run into some problems just getting a IPS monitor like this up and running?
But yes the 40 pin IPS displays are rare but would be so neat with a screen like that, that might as well be a anti-glare coated.

Great that you found a screen that you really like! Hoping to find one myself one day :)

Welcome to the Antarctica Club :-/

Have you PM'd your service tag to Justin @ Dell over on Spiceworks ?

The more people who have and report this problem the sooner Dell will pull its finger out.

Running Linux on my M4800 I havn't seen a freeze yet.
BUT I do have massive problems with DPMS not beeing able to switch the display back on when it had set it to any of the standby modes before.
The machine is still responsive, ie I can ssh into it over the network and work on it remotely, but the display is dead until I restart the X Server. That could look like a frozen machine too from the outside.

So I'm wondering now if machines with the freeze issue under Windows might also still be accessible remotely? Did anybody of you test that yet?
Maybe it is a common DPMS issue?

    Hi,

I have just ordered a Dell Precision M4800. Unfortunately I was not thorough and missed the lot of freezing issues reported on spiceworks' thread.

I am just wondering whether the issues exist on Win8 also or just the win7 suffers. My GPU is K1100.

    Regards,

I've seen it in Win 8.1, fairly infrequently. I've contacted justin on the spiceworks thread.
