M4800 is better in every way.. I upgraded from M4600. I can tell you... I'll never buy an M4600 again.
Now you can buy a used M4800 for only $250 on ebay. There's no reason to buy M4600 or M4700.

I was lucky enough to buy a new old stock M4800. It was purchased in 2016 but the original owner has never used it.

    Hello gentlemen,
I have a LVDS M4800 that I am planning to retrofit to the eDP variant. I have ordered an eDP display assembly that appears complete but I have a question.

On the LVDS assembly, the lid-close magnet is mounted to the TN panel's bracket. On the eDP assembly, I don't see a magnet or at least not one as obvious. How and where is the magnet located on the eDP assembly?

Lid close magets are on middle left of your LCD and underneath keyboard.

IIRC the magnet "sensor" on the motherboard is actually on the underside of the left I/O "daughterboard", in between the two USB ports. The magnet in the screen assembly should be in the corresponding position.

Thanks for the replies, guys. However, there may be a misunderstanding. Let me post a photo and see if that helps clear up my question.

Here we see the TN panel of the earlier LVDS variant of the M4800. In focus especially is the left mounting bracket of the panel, specifically the magnet ensconced snugly in the bracket.

A typical IPS panel, such as that used in the later eDP variant of the M4800, instead uses mounting tabs that are integral to the panel itself, such as in this picture:

Here is the top lid of the eDP variant:

I don't seen any provision for the magnet; ergo my inquiry.

Here is the answer: the magnet was attached to the bezel for the eDP variant. Luckily the eDP assembly I purchased included a bezel!

It's best to get rid of these demonic magnets from old M4800s... these magnets cause malfunctions such as random sleep mode, etc.

    Unlik
Unlikely. See the M6800 GPU upgrade thread (should be near the top) for stories of trying Pascal cards in that system. M4800 will be the same. Unless you can find a specific vBIOS for the card, the system will not boot with a Pascal card installed.
