That's helpful, thanks. The first two, based on username and date, are probably the same person. Assuming that's true, both of these cases involved refurbished machines - perhaps that's a common factor.

@hammmy Was your unit bought as a refurb?

You realize many other companies do the same thing and have similar problems? Case in point: here's an example from Apple (who I don't like at all). And an Asus. And an HP.

This is not a problem isolated to Dell, like you seem to be implying.

As I said, mine was bought new and used daily for 6 years. The hinges are a little worse for wear, so it's definitely not in pristine condition. But no lid switch issues. I would guess this issue affects a very small number of units overall.

Yeah, but that's indeed a poor engineering idea. I think many companies no longer use magnet sensor in their new machines

The 2018 iPad Pro has over 100, as do several of the notebooks I think. They still seem pretty prevalent to me.

The magnets on iPad are not lid sensors...

Also, using magnet sensor to detect whether laptop is closed or not is a pretty old practice in my opinion. If you have any magnet nearby your laptop, it can cause malfunctions.

I believe there are better practices now in 2019.

This is what I'm telling you - current machines still use this method. I don't know what you're basing these beliefs on.

AFAIK magents are how just about everyone handles this. Very old machines used a physical switch that would trigger when you closed the lid.
We have three or four M4800's at the office that never had a problem like this. Maybe it is a common issue but it certainly doesn't affect "all" of these systems.

Mine has no problem with the magnet sensor; I'm not sure what prompted the advice to remove or disable a key function for a laptop.

In other news, I gambled on buying a LVDS board and converting the lid and cable over to eDP. The reason I did so--contrary to this thread's recommendation from years back--is that Reddit had a thread that said it could be done:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/3ggtn9/lcd_panel_upgrade/

ZeDestructor made a comment to the effect that the LVDS and eDP board were both eDP capable--and in fact they do use the same cable connector on the motherboard side. There is also a Chinese thread from 51nb around where they speculate that the 4k screen could also work with the LVDS board but the thread was never resolved. However, i have the eDP 1080p cable and although the backlight does light, no data is presented. It's possible the cable I received with my eBay lid is defective but I rather think there's simply no getting the LVDS board to work with eDP. I'll be ordering an eDP board off eBay and will update if the problem follows (which would indicate the cable and a renewal of hope for LVDS boards).

    FYI:

8TB 2.5inch SATA SSD is now available:
    https://www.amazon.com/Micron-MTFDD...illion-Industry/dp/B07BJ75JN1#customerReviews

A user confirmed it works well in his Dell Precision laptop.
This Micron 8TB SSD is selling for under $650 on Ebay.

"Purchased this SSD as a secondary storage device for my Dell Precision 5520 laptop (with the primary SSD being a Samsung EVO 970 2TB), in order to crank up total storage to 9TB. The device works well, is fast, and I have zero complaints - happy!" - Amazon review

Have you guys tried AMD WX 4130 DDR5 2GB MXM on M4800?
Does it work without any issue?
I'm interested in buying it because now WX 4130 sells for only $100.
It looks much better than AMD M5100.
