M4800 Owner's Thread

Who else here has upgraded their GPU to either 965M, M1000M, or M2000M or anything else? What results are you getting?

 

I would like to know this as well, especially for the M2000M. The K2100M is outdated, though I have to admit still rather commendable for what its still capable of. I can run the beta for the newest Quake with everything on high at a very smooth, playable framerate. I dont know what the FPS is right off hand, but it does not lag, hiccup or anything. I was rather impressed the first time I loaded it up. I didnt expect it to run well at all.

 

If I can sell my P157SM, Im looking forward to buying the m4800. Some of them are getting close to the 400 dollar mark on ebay.

If that becomes the scenario then ill be getting the 965m 4GB as well but I have no concrete timeline for it all.

 

Curious, what is your reason for moving from the P157SM to the M4800? They seem like they would be similarly speced.

I got my M4800 for around $600 on eBay with the specs that can be seen in my sig, except for the FireCuda drive which I added. I think you would be very happy with it. I am, even if the hardware is a few years old.

 

Feels like their is input lag or something from mouse to screen that my m4600 doesnt experience.

The keyboard is really nice to type on the p157sm but the m4600 keyboard is hands down my favorite and one of the most important elements to me personally and im not mistaken the keyboard is the same on the m4800.

Spec wise the p157sm can be much better though obviously, how I interact with the machine is very important to me, its why I dont really spend much time on my y510p of late despite having better performance.

 

Has anyone with the AMD Firepro M5100 been able to get 4K@60Hz from Displayport > active DP to HDMI adapter > HDMI > monitor or TV? Using the Club3D Displayport 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 UHD (CAC-1070) I can't get above 4K@30Hz. I created a custom resolution of 3840 x 2160 60Hz and CVT-RB in AMD settings. Maybe the problem is there's no option to change bpc and I need 8bpc. Does anyone see that option? If so which AMD and Intel drivers are you using?

Having read the first 92 pages of this thread, I must say I'm impressed with the civility of the forum compared to some others I've joined.

My goal is to get an M4800 with Windows 10 from newegg, pull the Windows and place in caddy for optical drive, and insert my Linux Mint 18.2.

Will any of the hardware (other than perhaps boot order) need to be adjusted because of Windows?

 

Hi, all. I'm too lazy to read through all 194 pages, so I was hoping for a quick answer here. I recently got a used m4800 and so far I love it. The only issue I have is the QHD screen which presents some scaling problems with older applications that were not designed with High DPI in mind. I was wondering if it was possible to replace the current QHD screen with a "normal" 1080p screen.

All the replacement 1080p screens I've found so far either have the wrong connector (30 pin instead of the required 40 pin) or the connector and mounting hardware are in the wrong place. Is there a 1080p display that will fit the way a QHD display will?

 

Not sure about the screen, but if you are using the latest version of Windows 10, there is a way to fix your scaling issues.

Right-click the shortcut to the program with scaling issues and select "Properties", then the "Compatibility" tab, and then select the option for "Override high DPI scaling ..." -> "System". I've done this with six or seven programs which had scaling issues and they all worked properly afterwards.

 

Thanks for the fast reply. Overriding dpi scaling by application works well for most applications, although there are several legacy applications that simply don't work that way. (mainly CATIA)

For now I've settled for 200% scaling which eliminates blurry text but also offers decent screen real estate.

 

Let me ask my question a different way...if I replace a Windows 10 hdd or ssd with one loaded with Linux Mint, will I have to deal with UEFI?

 

Anyone know what the part number for the FHD panel for the M4800 is with the eDP connector? Im looking to replace the current HD (1366*768) screen with a FHD (1920*1080).
