M4800 Owner's Thread

hi, i just bought a like new m4800 from a retailer shop and it is window 7 pro. I have some question about upgrade to window 10. In case that want to come back to window 7 because I feel win 10 is unstable and the software I used haven't supported it. Can I just install clean win 7 to it without concern about license and in case that I feel win 10 is mature enough. Can I install it again since I already upgrade to it once in the past

Moreover, do win 10 upgraded from win 7 is for lifetime or just 1 year?

 

You only get a "free" Windows 10 license if you upgrade within one year of release (by end of July).
If you upgrade now and then revert, you will have your license. You can then upgrade or clean install again in the future --- as long as to Windows it looks like you have the same PC.

Im a new member. Followed instructions from tips in this old thread for fast respons.

I have a M4800 bought new in 2014. SSD and 16 GB RAM. Never any problems and today it wont start. Lamps just blinks one time when powerbutton is pressed. No fans spooling up, no booting, screen not turning on etc. Tried several power adapters, and tried starting both with and without battery. No luck.

Ive read several posts on this issue and im in the area of beliving that the motherboard is broken.
Any other tips or ideas are very welcome! I feel pretty sad about the situation and cant see what to test next.

I updated bios to A16 version and get into this problem
the battery is still charging but during booting, there's warning that there's a problem with adapter, also, the charging notification LED doesn't light up. Preivous Bios version A06 have it working fine

 

I no longer have any audio output from my m4800 (Windows 8.1). I've searched this thread and didn't find a solution. I normally have my M4800 docked (e-port plus II), lid closed (2 external monitors), with a cheap set of speakers plugged into the dock's headphone jack. At some point last week it stopped playing any sound to the external or internal speakers, docked or not, laptop's or dock's headphone jack, after multiple reboots in various configurations (dock/undock, etc.).

I found a way to get sound temporarily - it hasn't lasted though sleep, hibernation, undock/docking, or overnight (docked, powered on, and awake). Turn it on (lid open, undocked, nothing plugged in), log in, put it to sleep and close the lid, dock it (no speakers plugged in), wake it up (lid closed). This gives me sound from the internal speakers (one device shown in volume control). Then when I plug in external speakers (dock's or laptop's jack), there are still two devices shown in volume control and sound is played through the external speakers only (identified as "headphones" in volume control). I'm pretty sure it used to only list a single device in the volume control, even when the external speakers were plugged in.

Any idea what is going on? My IT department hasn't found any solutions yet and I'm afraid they will end up wanting to re-image the whole thing.

M4800, i7-4910MQ, BIOS A14, Bitlocker disk encryption, NVIDIA Quadro K2100M, Windows 8.1 Enterprise (64-bit), UHD

Installed sound controllers: NVIDIA HD Audio (v1.3.34.3) and Realtek HD Audio (v6.0.1.6053). Both are reported as the latest version when I try to update the drivers. All audio devices are listed as using Realtek HD Audio.

 

I've had issues with the audio on my M4800 using the Realtek driver, I switched to the stock Microsoft/Windows driver (listed as just "High Definition Audio Device") and that has been fine.

The NVIDIA HD Audio driver will only be used if you are sending audio over the HDMI connection.

 

Use a 180W adapter.

I am having a hard time to decide on M4800 vs 5710.
Though I thinking to only make the decision on Second Half of 2016, I kinda fear that M4800 somehow being retired.

I prefer M4800 primarily because ...

1. The Design & Great Built - No Warm Hand Palm.
   I currently using M4600 and it has been almost 4 years. It is my favourite machine. Yeah, it is heavy and thick but I wouldn't mind, because it is well built. My hand does not have the warm fussy feeling anymore whenever I am using CPU Intensive Task or Gaming like my previous experience with Dell Consumer Line XPS, those thin laptop.
2. Great and Full keyboard with Minimal FN Combo.

While, I also prefer 5710 because ...

1. It is the latest Dell Mobile Workstation, with recent updated 6th Generation Intel Processor hence futureproof my next laptop for at least another 5 years.

My concern if I get M4800 is I wouldn't able to futureproof my next laptop for at least another 5 years due to 2 Generation Behind Intel Processor in terms of Speed, Battery Savings features and other major features.

My General Use for my Mobile Workstation is quite simple actually - browsing, some Programming, some Print Design Works (though seldom) and about average 40 Hours of Gaming in a month. Sometimes, I also would like to learn using Adobe Lightroom for personal fun project.

Any constructive comments are welcome.

 

You would be very hard pressed to notice any CPU performance difference on the i7 quad cores from Haswell to Skylake. GPU performance might be another issue depending on what you choose. The default firepro on the 5710 is about the same as the K1100m and slightly slower than the k2100 or m5100. The new quadro cards do offer some performance boost. I agree with you on the build quality though - tough to beat the the m4500 through m4800 series.

 

Does anyone have m4800 with IPS display? Can you provide the name of panel manufacturer please? thanks.
