M4800 Owner's Thread

I don't think it exceeds sRGB, much less aRGB.

I use a colorimeter to create profiles for the UHD display (see my post a few posts back). The colors are well controlled.

Now, I can't really speak for the other IGZO 4K panels, but I do have an M4400 with the RGB LED display. That one has a tendency to oversaturate the reds, and calibrating the screen resolves that problem. But that display has a larger gamut than the IGZO display (at 100% aRGB).

We have a bunch of M4800s in use and we're at a point where it would make sense to deploy docks.

Most of the machines would have a general office work use case, nowhere pushing the machines to their capacity. A single external monitor would be fine in most cases, and only a few basic ports (2x usb for mouse/keyboard, ethernet) are needed.

The PR03X fits the bill well, and the cost savings of grabbing a bunch off of eBay are hard to ignore.

I know that the M4800s will dock, but I'm concerned about issues with the 130W PSUs that these units have. Does performance throttle down to battery power? What happens if we plug in a 180W PSU in the dock?

Also, my understanding is that there are two generations of these docks, the ones with the blue usb 3.0 ports playing better with the M4800s. Any truth to this?

I have a USB 2.0 version that works fine for all my needs. It did come with a 240W adapter though.

The usb 2.0 ones are insanely cheap, just for the sake of testing I'll grab one.

Somewhat surprised that yours came with such a large PSU, but assuming nothing caught on fire it does confirm that the stock 180W bricks should work, thanks for that.

 

You can use higher-rated PSUs with the docks, it works fine. It just passes through to the laptop, and the laptop itself then provides power to the dock (which uses very little, it's just a port replicator). The machines will throttle if used with a PSU lower than 180W.

 

Having done it... guaranteed throttling with < 180W PS.

 

Yeah I bought that dock specifically because of the larger PSU. I think I got both for the price of a new 180W adapter. As others have said, if you have 180 or more, you'll be golden.

I have Pro2X USB 2.0 dock (bought a used one on ebay) with stock 180W stock PSU, and works fine without any issues. Any advantage we get by running M4800/dock on 240 PSU?

Used/refurb Pro2X USB 2.0 dock off of ebay is the cheapest option I'd say (probably you can strike a deal with seller if you are buying a bunch from the same seller ~$23 (or less) and also ensure that defective ones goes back to the seller and buy 180W PSU's off ebay ~$28)

 

The extra wattage is probably only useful if someone with an M6800 will occasionally share the dock.

I am looking at purchasing either the Dell 34" Curved Ultrawide or the LG version. However, I need to know if my external ports of the m4800 will support the monitors resolution of 3440x1440. Ideally, I would like to continue using my basic Docking station as well.

I have the NVIDIA Quadro K1100M with UHD in the M4800.
