Just to follow up on my own post.. Yes, the basic docking station does support DP and the monitor works great. As a further test, i was able to get the DELL 34", (2) Asus 24" and the 4k display on the laptop itself all running at same time. I did have to use a VGA connection on one of the 24" Asus, and the DP on the laptop (not the dock), but still, it all works.

Good to hear... I'd be happy with two of the curved Dell 34" displays.

Hi there, I was wondering if you've done this upgrade, I've heard from another user that the mainboard is actually different. He bought the bits, recommended by Dell, did the upgrade and ended up with a blank screen. He had to downgrade again after being told by Dell (retrospectively) that the upgrade could not be done.

I'd like to do this but want to make sure it will be a smooth process.

I have done this upgrade twice on systems that had a 720p panel with the 40 pin connector. But you need to make sure you are buying the correct cable/screen for your system. Last spring Dell did change the from a 40 pin to a new eDP connector on the motherboard. If you currently have a 40 pin (older style) connector, the screen I listed will work but you will need to upgrade the LVDS cable to the FHD one - see the link in my original post. If you do the upgrade, you will be very happy with this panel - it is beautiful.

Thanks so much - now I'm excited again. The 768 panel is so awful-- viewing angles and smearing on scrolling and colours.

A screen going temporarily blank was caused by the display driver crashing and restarting itself on my computer. Such events can you find recorded in Windows Reliability Monitor. (Search your Control Panel.) Reinstalling the crashing driver, possibly with a more reliable version, should alleviate such a problem.
Sometimes, reverting to an older driver and then letting it update back to the newest version—all within the Device Manager—will do the trick; but for Intel HD drivers, I do recommend using those provided by Dell.
(Whereas I second others’ recommendation to get Nvidia drivers from Nvidia.)

unfortunately I'm in the UK so Ebay is my friend :/

I purchased my [refurb] M4800 about a month ago. I have had the screen apart so I know it has a VAQ10 EDP FHD Cable dated 2015/04/25 which sounds like a newer type.

Nice - looks like you should be able to put a 30 pin IPS FHD screen in then.
