Can someone tell me with what video card M4800 is more stable:
    AMD FirePro™ M5100 w/2GB GDDR5
    or
    NVIDIA® Quadro® K1100M w/2GB GDDR5
    ?

I select the configuration to work. I do not work in the 3D. I work more with Win7, but also with Linux.

I have 8GB RAM in my M4800 at the moment (2 x 4GB). I'm going to order a 16GB kit from Crucial but am not sure which of the following to choose. They'll all about the same price (within £5 of each other).

    Brand: Ballistix
    16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 PC3-14900 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64
    (DDR3 PC3-14900 • 10-10-10-30 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1866 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64)

    Brand: Ballistix
    16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64
    (DDR3 PC3-12800 • 9-9-9-24 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64)

    Brand: Crucial
    16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 PC3-14900 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64
    (DDR3 PC3-14900 • CL=13 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1866 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64)

    Brand: Crucial
    16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64
    (DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64)

Should I just go for the fastest Ballistix RAM (PC3-14900)?

Since I already have 2 x 4GB installed, could I still use them in combination with the new 2 X 8GB sticks or will it affect performance if they're not the same speed? Should I just stick with the two new sticks in that case?

    Thanks!

Download CPU-z and buy memory that matches what's in there.

You can definitely add the 16 GB in the free slots for a total of 24.

    CPU-z says it's PC3-128000.

Am I better off getting some of that to make it 24GB RAM in total, or getting the faster RAM?

I added 2x4 to mine for a total of 16, which is currently plenty for me. If you feel like the price difference is negligible or anticipate needing more than that, then I'd say add 16 to get 24.

Are you planning to run a bunch of VMs or something?

Yes: I have to run multiple instances of Ubuntu on the machine and am doing stats in memory with Stata. I'll get the extra 16GB so.

Will it be a problem mixing the two new 14900 sticks with the existing 12800 sticks?

Probably not, but maybe is the best I can say.

I believe the 1866 ram will downclock to match the 1600, so I would buy pc12800 to match the existing pair.

If you're dead set on the faster ram, go for all 14900.

Also I believe the difference will be negligible unless you're using the iGPU.

Note that getting at the factory installed pair requires getting the keyboard off.

Not my personal experience, but there have been reports that non-matching RAMs would together downclock lower than 1600.
There have been other reports claiming that one would get about 13–15 % of extra performance with the faster RAM.
So choose wisely. Either add matching RAM, or go for 1866-MHz only.
