There's a wireless dock that Dell sells for ~$300 - I snagged on on eBay somehow for $30. I'd say it's worth up to $90 maaaybe; certainly not $300.

I like it more for the super fast wireless connection (line of sight aka one room) than the wireless display function.

Oh, that's great. So you can use it today as a "wireless HDMI" w/the e-port; by connecting the e-port to your HDTV w/HDMI? Is that right? That is awesome.

What about BT? is it 4.0 and it works OK? I assume you also have the same wireless card (Dell Wireless 1601 2x2 802.11n+BT+60GHz (WiGig) .

    One more question:
Another spec that I wasn't sure about was the vpro managment. The Dell rep that helped me place the order for the M4800 claimed that vpro is used only in a corporate environment;for IT support to serivce/update machines off site. Then again, she also said the 802.11ac standard was slower than -n; so she wasn't exactly an expert. Is vpro something an end user with no IT support may use?

    Thanks again for your help!

    V.

That’s what I believe too—that “v pro” is for remote management. The CPU side of it is called “management engine interface” in the device manager. (It’s there even with v-pro disabled; just having this device in the device manager doesn’t mean you can do anything with it.)
I have no idea what having “v pro” could be good for unless you wanted to allow a remote IT person to connect to your computer and make changes to it (even, reportedly, when the computer has been switched off).

My understanding is that vPro allows a few fancy tricks, as it runs on the CPU, below the actual OS - as a result, you can remotely connect and interact w/ the BIOS for example, even if there's no OS on the machine (i.e. the disk is blank or broken).

I don't think you need to worry about it as a personal user. I don't. It looks handy, but I highly doubt I'll ever need it.

Thank you so much guys for all the help!

Reading this thread; so full of input from amazingly knowledgeable users; I have reinforced my feeling that I totally don't deserve this beast of a machine; but after frying a Think pad and a E6510 cpu's half-way through digitizing my DVD collection, I was looking for a power horse.
Besides, I have hand mobility problems and for me the dual-row track-pad is an absolute God send. Almost no other laptops have that feature anymore.

May I ask why so many of you choose to do a clean install? It sounds like a lot of work if the machine doesn't have a lot of bloatware.

BTW: I've had the strange power management behaviors mentioned here in both my E6510 & a E6410. I actually assumed that all Dells did that. I always had issues waking the things up if I just ejected them from the port replicator & also the screen changing resolution if I docked them awake. I got used to putting them to sleep every time before undocking or docking & had luck with that. I'll be very psyched if the ctr-alt-F1-F7 trick works on the M4800 and I can move it around not asleep w/o issues.I can't wait to get the system delivered!

I did a clean install because I was putting my own SSD in anyway. I installed 8 to try it out and stuck with it, would probably have imaged 7 over otherwise. A clean install really doesn't take too long if you're sitting in front of the TV, IMO.

I've had no problems popping my machine in and out of the dock while on and/or asleep, for the record.

I looked right away into the D5000 wireless dock & found that Dell replaced the original GMM97 part with part # K1M51. Still calling it D5000, though.

All information I could extract from Dell, unsurprisingly, is that the k1m51 is much newer and better, but no details. Anybody knows more?

Sorry if I missed prior postings in my search. Until I get my shiny M4800, I'm seriously limping along.

Hmmm, I have no idea about that one. Honestly, there's not a whole lot of info. out there about the D5000, except a few reviews from right when it came out. If you find out anything conclusive, please let me know.

I personally would never pay the $300 Dell wants for it - I just looked on eBay and saw some from $60-80.
