Hey guys, so I am looking at getting a laptop, and I am not sure what would be the best.
Part of me says to get something portable like a MacBook Air/ 13" MBPr.

The other part of me that craves all of the power tells me to get something that is much more powerful yet much bigger.

Particularly I found a great deal on a Dell M4800. I am a college student, and I don't use a computer in class, but would be using it around campus, in the library or coffee shops.

I am just curious if anyone could offer some guidance, or experience with this sort of dilemma.

    Thanks!

Some might consider it a little heavy but build quality and cooling are solid. You will not have to deal with throttling issues like most ultrabooks have. I use an m4800 for class - if you check ebay you can find some nice configs for under a grand that will still come with the 3 year next business day onsite warranty.

I have never owned a lighter computer so this was easy for me. ;)

I don’t carry it around often, but sometimes I do and I don’t find its size intimidating much. But the thing does weigh about 3 kg or 7 pounds.

With the FHD version, there is seldom a reason to pack the A/C brick. If you go for “retina+” display, though, you will have to lower your expectations of battery life. (To about four hours max?)

On a lighter note, I find something Maserati-like about the dual grilled air vents on the back coupled with the overall metallic finish of undescribable hue. (Is it brown with a hint of bordeaux?)

EDIT: Sorry, I overlooked the question in the subject. Nope, this is definitely a desktop replacement for me. If you normally work on a desktop and you only want a laptop to go, why get something this big? Unless you desperately need the power on the go. Or unless you want to part with your desktop.

Can anyone confirm if the Blu-Ray drive on the M4800 is region free? IE: can play different region Blu-Ray movies? I believe it's the UJ-272 that's in there. I.. got some movies from the UK and realized that not all of them said, "region free"... so they are Region B/2 and I'm about to order a UJ-272 Blu-Ray drive for my laptop.

edit: Nevermind, I've never dealt with BD drives before on a computer, I see it now... so it seems it's based on software and the player and BD+ and stuff that prevents it.

Has anyone successfully used their M4800 with charger on an airplane? I fly every week, and haven't yet found a single plane that can run my M4800 (I think its due to the 130W adapter). Is it possible to use a smaller adapter?

I don't think you can pull more than 80W on a plane circuit. The info is buried somewhere in the M3800 thread.

If you have an 80W charger it will throttle and run slowly while on and plugged in. It will probably drive you nuts but you can shut it down and it will charge while off.

Latitude D Series 90W power supplys will work (under Linux, I never got this to work under Windows).
The trick is not to connect the PS immediately, but AFTER the Linux kernel is up. I usually connect the PS after I've entered my passwords.

Connecting the power supply earlier (ie. before booting), results in the BIOS extortion^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hwarning screen and getting throttled to 133MHz

The machine will still throttle somewhat, but be still fast enough to not-too-compute intensive work. So watching video in 1080p or office work or some such is fine. Just don't expect to do heavy number crunching.
You also shouldn't attach USB devices that pull too much power, that might bring the PS to its limit and the battery would have to cover. I regularly recharge my Nexus 4 off the M4800 while I'm on the train, but I wouldn't want to connect anything that pulls drastically more power.

And yes, the Laptop battery will recharge just fine on the 90W PS, it will just take MUCH longer.

too bad... I bet some were thinking to charge their 24v garage batteries to makeup for tax on tickets. imagine flying London Sydney and spending 1 week using the charge you got from Airbus 777 no wonder some planes went missing in recent.

    Hi everyone.

I was wondering how well does the M4800 does in modern games.

Especially for owners with the FirePro M5100 or Quadro K2100, have you tried overclocking your cards ? If the K2100 is anything like the K1100 then it should have a large margin for overclocks. Anyone has any experience with any of those GPUs ?

No overclocking, but I've maxed it out with Civ Beyond Earth at 3200x1800. It plays fine but it's definitely working hard.
