Thanks for responding. It wouldn’t bother me if it were the fan starting. But (with the newer drivers) I hear the sound—a very faint sharp ‘snap’—at every precise moment anything asks for the dGPU, even if it’s just the Nvidia Control Panel, especially the page with the revolving logo. (Actually, going through the various pages of the control panel will generate quite some ‘snapping’.) The fan does not necessarily start afterwards.

Maybe if it had always been so, I’d just have considered it normal. ;)

I am now back on the older driver, by the way, and when time permits, I’m bound on finding the precise driver generation that started doing this. Though I admit that I might as well give up, eventually, and accept this as audible indication that something asked for the dGPU. :confused2:

Same problem, actually didn't know where it was coming from but I have the latest drivers since install and noticed the sound a few times.

Just curious, do you have hybrid graphics enabled?

Pardon my ignorance; if that’s how you call automatic selection between iGPU and dGPU, then yes, I have.

I have a request that may seem a bit odd. :)

A company I just started working for ordered an M4800 for me based on my specs. I will not see it until next week. But I need to figure out if it will fit in the backpack I purchased already.

I can get the dimensions from Dell's spec sheet, but these tend to not always be accurate. Also, I ordered the 9-cell battery instead of the standard 6-cell, which sometimes means an extra bit "sticking out" in the back of the machine that's not accounted for in standard dimension listings.

So... is there anyone out there with an M4800 with the 9-cell battery who is willing to measure it for me? I'd be most grateful. :) Thanks.

I wonder if it just trips the fan because something starts to use the GPU, but then realizes that it's not getting hot enough to need it so it cuts it back off before it even really spins up. It is odd though.

The nine cell battery does not stick out, so you don't have anything to worry about there. I can measure the dimensions for you shortly and will edit the post to add that info.

Also, I have this bag (I know, not a backpack, and sadly it's been discontinued), and it fits the M4800 like a glove.

Edit: Tape measure says: 14-25/32" wide by 10-1/16" deep by 1-15/32" thick.

I went by those dimensions. They indicated my venerable laptop luggage would be a snug fit, and it is. ;)

That’s one possible theory. If it was so, at least there would be hope that they could easily fix it in some upcoming release.
