Just bought my first Precesion. I have been a Dell outlet customer for years (have 5 of them , the oldest is an Inspiron 1705) All running. Bought an Alienware last time for $600 am giving it to my daughte

I needed to look at a replacement for a home built desktop for my Music Studio and decided the Precision fit the Bill but I did not want to spend a whole lot. Saw a few on the outlet but they were $1429 (-20% coupon)
Not bad but calling them always saves a few dollars. So I bought the following

    I7-3720QM
    KM1000 2G
    750 7200
    16 GB 1600
    DVD RW
15,6 FHD LED Display ( not sure about resolution)
    Standard WiFi
    No BT

    Price was $1008 shipped

Thats not too bad for those specs. Would have preferred a K2000M but I don;t do any Gaming. Mostly Multi track Audio and Home video. I have found calling them with an immediate RMA after getting it is met with an additional credit to the card if one keeps it as well. So that could come down another $50- $100 in my experience.

Never bought extended Warranties and would not have used them so 3 years should be plenty. I am used to one.

"FHD" means "full HD" or 1920x1080. So, best you can get for this machine.

Congratulations! This is amazing price for such an amazing laptop. How did you get such a good price? Did you order online or over the phone?

I buy all my Dells from the Outlet . I check Techbargains for Coupons. That's where I found the 40% off Precision yesterday. I subscribe to the Dell outlet tweets. I saw one and put it in my cart at 3AM I called this morning to see what else they had (I never buy without talking to a sales person).. and talked with Ricardo Ramos Avalos [email protected]
    1-888-518-3355 (x4251225) Very nice guy.

He found me the Dell spec above at around $1200 . I asked for a 20% discount and to my surprised he delivered. Better than the $1429 (after the discount) i7 M4700 speced out on the outlet the night before for the same money!!

The only thing it did not have as the BT module but those are easy to find and install. I replaced one in my M11X and I am sure that was a lot harder than getting into a Precision.

When it comes i will immediately call Dell and ask for an RMA. Like clockwork they will offer another $50 - $100 to keep it. I will accept the offer and enjoy the machine. I ordered an M17X Alienware before the M11 and it was HUGE so i asked for an RMA and they offered more to keep it but it was too big.

If they don't I will still keep it. I think its a good deal and I have never had issues with a refurb. The way I look at it is these machines are assembled and tested in Taiwan. they get sent to the buyer. the buyer has an issue or doesn't like it and sends it to a US Dell facility where they go through the whole thing again and fix wrongs and put them on the outlet. So it has been seen by the US Dell techs and repaired buy them.

When too many show up they start sending out tweets with coupons and discounts but i ALWAYS call to place the order and ask for discounts that go beyond the coupons. Never order online without speaking to someone.

Be sure to watch the videos on laptopscreen.com, and read the relevant section in the service manual, before attempting to replace the screen.

Has anybody noticed a brand new battery wear level that shows in the hwinfo64 system check main window?
My brand new (supposedly) battery already shows 4.5% wear level. From what I googled up it looks like a 6 month old battery.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks pterodactilo, That's good information.
Can you tell me if you got Windows 7 or Windows 8 on your M4700 ? Also, the Country of Assembly (Mexico, China, etc..).

Thanks again for the direct comparision opinion.

I have a M4700 quad with a K2000M. When the laptop is hooked up to two or more monitors (docked or undocked), the fan cycles every 15-30 seconds even when the laptop is doing nothing (task manager shows processor almost idle).

I put a utility on the system and the problem is the GPU (or at least it appears to be GPU) - it gets up to 57C, then the laptop fan kicks on. The GPU fan does not kick on.

I took the laptop to the laptop repair center for my company (this is a company supplied laptop) . They updated the BIOS, upgraded the graphics card driver software and eventually replaced the graphics card. There was no change.

They eventually tested this on other machines with the same configuration and found the same problem. It's now been sent into "the system."

Any ideas as to what I should try next or how to get them to escalate this far enough up the dell chain? Other utilities that would help me diagnose would be useful.

Mine came with Windows 7. Country of assembly is China. As for the screens I compared them once again and definitely M4600's is brighter and more contrasty. Also I've noticed that colors are slighty better, less washed-out. If I were to choose one it would be the LGLP156WF1 (TL) (B2) of M4600. I don't know why Dell didn't keep this exact model on the precision M4700, in my opinion it's the best TN panel I've used so far, even better than the famous AUO V.4
