I'm a lurker here, but a long time Dell owner. My Xps is long in tooth, so I'm excited about the M4700.

All I need is a relatively low-end system, I think the i5 will do me fine with a SSD, so I spec'd out the system and came up with a total. I then contacted Dell Small Business to see if they could do better. At first, they did, then they updated to a little more than the web site. So, what's the point of calling them? They only discount off the seriously high gouging prices when you add RAM, etc?

some give you a discount, some not.
what you could do too is to search for a a other shop. when you dont want so "fancy" stuff like the rgb display you will find several other offers from different shops.

to buy direct at dell is not alway the cheapest way even when they give you a discount...as a example, i wanted to buy the u2711 monitor from dell but they could not even match the amazon rate..which is not the cheapest out there.
so..try it again with a other salesman or look if you can get it from a different shop.

by the way, the m4600 is now much cheaper so maybe that could be something for you too...

I know many of you here plan on using this for graphics work and the like, but I'm a more mainstream developer - I do code, compilation, etc.

Any one here decide for the Core i5? I'm wondering about heat as compared to the core i7. Also batteyr life impact going with an i7?

My thought is that when I kick off my builds, the i7 is not going to do that much for me. At least 8GB of ram plus a Sata-3 SSD is going to give me the most bang for the buck.

    Comments?

Just a thought for future expandability – you're limited to two RAM slots (16 GB max) with a dual-core CPU. Of course you can always swap the CPU out later, too.

How is your M4700 now so far. ANy heat problems? I found someone on youtube who's M4600 got smoking only 3-4 months after he bought it...

I haven't done too much work on it yet. ALso 3720QM and I work in Protools. 10 days after I received it I added RAM to the basic 2GB. Because the bios gave only 1333mhz for speed instead of the 1600 I bought I took the one under the keyboard out. I noticed the palmrest isn't flush. Then I remembered the review I read that said just like you that the fans are loud but I can't hear anything so I doubt that they work(how can I check if they work? I took the baseplate off, booted up the computer, loaded protools all without the fans moving only on shutting down before power went off it seemed the one above the HD spinned briefly) If that's the case than that could explain the uneven palmrest that might've gotten overheated and expanded. My readings on the keyboard are the same as yours. 86F maximum on top of the slight "bump" that pushes up keys F7,F8,F9.

I would appreciate your thoughts on it?

when you want to check if your fans are working you can use the system check. press f12 when it boots and you can choose the option.
