I'm looking at buying the M4700 (with Nvidia Quadro K2000M graphics) and I'm wondering how many external displays are supported with this chip when docked with the E-Port Plus Advanced Port Replicator. According to the Dell site (Precision M4700 Mobile Workstation Details | Dell), 5 displays requires AMD graphics (and possibly some dongles), but I'm wondering with the Nvidia chip how many are supported and in what configuration. The Dell site has no documentation that I can find on what configurations are supported with which chips. Ideally I'd like to have 3 external displays + the built-in panel. Two of the displays are DVI + HDMI + VGA, and one of them is Displayport + DVI, so I'd be fine with a DP + DVI + VGA setup if I had to. Anyone have any idea?

I'd like to know too, it's funny how there's literaly no documentation about that. The Nvidia chip support 5 displays, it says the following on the URL you linked:

"Handle 3D modeling and other graphics-intensive jobs with professional-grade AMD® or NVIDIA® graphics options, and take in the view with support for up to five displays when docked."

I remember reading somewhere that you can't use DP + DVI at the same time, so you'd have to choose between:

    2 DP monitor + VGA + HDMI + built-in
    2 DVI monitor + VGA + HDMI + built-in

I have a M4700 + AMD + the new port replicator on order so I will update this thread when I have made some test.

It should be possible, but those keys are super easy to break so be extra careful. Usually, you can remove a key by pulling on the top, but be extra careful. There are some videos on youtube, not all keyboards have the same mechanisms and again, did i say that the key mechanisms were rather fragile.

If the mechanism is broken and not the contact switch, it might be possible to order a replacement if you somehow manage to find one, but if the switch is shot, it means a new keyboard.

That said, the keyboard shouldn't break so easily, especially on a precision, you could always try to get it replaced under warranty if it is broken.

i dont think the warranty counts for when i broke it myself..so in theory i could say direct that it doesnt work as it should and let them change it. well, i will watch some videos and see what i will do , thx!

I have a question for you: what type of case do you have for the m4700?
I was searching for a sleeve case, but even on dell site I didn't find anything that can fit the m4700
The dell 15" sleeve are thin and can't accommodate the 4700
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks

Singapore user here. I've been using the M4700 for 2 weeks. Unfortunately the experience wasn't that good.

The Seagate HDD developed problems almost immediately when I repartitioned and install Windows.

At the bottom middle area (on the task bar), whenever I flex the lid, or just give it a light tap, that area will have a ripple, similar to the effect when you just poke the LCD directly. Something must be pushing against it from somewhere (behind?).

1st service call. Changed my HDD to a WD. Remove the bezel and LCD to reveal a slightly crumpled ribbon cable behind the LCD. The guy tried to flatten/straigthen it back. Ripple effect was better but still there. Nevertheless, he changed my bezel and reported the problem.

2nd service call. Changed the entire back plate and hinge assembly that houses the ribbon cable. Ripple effect became worse! Besides the task bar area, the middle area of the LCD (around 3 x 3cm) also started rippling. Proceeded to change the LCD as well. Good! No more ripples. BUT, now there's a new problem. The bottom left of the bezel now has a bump. Not sure if the hinge is blocking but it looks awful. The guy reported the problem and I'm now waiting for the 3rd service call.

Quite disappointing but other than that, functionally it's working fine. If they still can't get it right, I'm going to demand a full replacement set. My boss is going to make alot of noise too!

    My M4700 specs:

    750GB HDD
    HD Webcam
    8x DVDRW slot-in
Backlit keyboard with plain palm rest w/o smartcard and fingerprint stuff
    9-cell 87Wh 3yr warranty battery
