My M6700 did this and I thought it was just Windows 8. I use the Windows stock audio drivers instead of the Dell ones and it works as expected.

Thanks Aaron44126, that fixed it for me. Maybe later I'll search around, there must be a setting somewhere or something to do the same thing with the Dell drivers.....at least I'd hope so.

Oh ace, thanks! Good to hear. I'm still waiting on mine :(

According to the specs, the sound card is a IDT 92HD93. A quick google says try going to the IDT Audio Control Panel, and then "Enable Jack Monitoring"?

This is only with IPS panel, I don't know if everyone but we know of 3 people already here in the forum. The 17" displays don't seem to have these problems. I haven't received answer from Dell until now but I will post after I got one.

I had seen that option before, it was ON by default, what that option does is when I plug my headset into the MIC port (my headset has a mic too), the IDT prompts me asking if I just plugged in a Mic or a Line In.

Although I did take the time to google it, some people reported the same issue on HP laptops with IDT audio drivers and one person said its due to having a Default Communications device which is Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound -> Playback tab, they said they removed it as Default Communications Device and it started working correctly when plugging in / unplugging headphones.

But I was unable to test this as I had:
    1. Uninstalled driver on my sound device and it rebooted and reverted to using the Windows audio driver(following Aaron's comment), Headphones started working correctly.
    2. Today, Re-installed the IDT audio driver to test that idea
    3. Rebooted
    4. Now it says its using the IDT audio driver and unplugging and plugging in the headphones is STILL working "correctly" as in sound automatically switches back and forth to/from headphones when I plug in and unplug them but I still have a Default Communications Device..........

So unfortunately this won't provide much help to anyone who has the same problem as I can't seem to duplicate the problem....

    Going to buy a M4700!
    i7-3720QM(2.6GHz, 6M cache), 8.0GB 1600MHz,15.6" FHD, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M, 750GB 2.5" 7200rpm HD, 9-cell (97Wh) Battery, Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300
How would this hold up running recent games?

It seems that AMD card will be better for games. But - quite decent configuration, I look for similar myself.

Can I suggest buying the 2GB ram option and upgrading yourself for significant savings? I also bought the 6300 for a few dollars less at amazon and swapped it in myself. Ok, basically I'd get the video card, screen and processor from Dell, and upgrade all the other parts on your own.

I have the M4000. What games would you like to know the performance of? If I have them I'll test it for you. If you are concerned about gaming and not CAD, I'd not go with the K1000M. Its about a GT630M / GT640M LE level of performance. The FirePro M4000 is between the GT 640M and GT650M in gaming performance.

Who are you asking that to?

The K1000M is a $150 option in the US and the K2000M is $175 on top of that. If you are asking the person who is considering ordering the K1000M, that may be a factor.
