That section is entirely missing on mine, I'll try installing the same version as yours and see if that makes a difference. I can live with it as it is but would definitely prefer the older scrolling system.

I've had a look under the battery and there's a small connector which is empty alongside a larger ribbon cable so I'm assuming that's the keyboard connector and the empty one is for the backlight which is good news as I can get a backlit keyboard organised.

Sometimes the support for older features gets dropped when they think that they are no longer used or wanted. I hope you'll be able to find that option. Otherwise we'll have to try to figure out why I'm lucky in this respect.

I've tried your driver and the other one from the Dell site but neither show the option, the latest one adds some zig zag gesture so I checked I didn't have this on the older ones in case they weren't installed properly but it wasn't there. I wonder if the difference is due to you running Windows 7 rather than Windows 8? I'm also wondering if there's a non-Dell driver I can use instead that might give more options.

It's quite plausible that gestures-orientated Windows 8 means that the older scrolling compatibility isn't installed.

The touchpad properties show that it is Alps. Hunt around for an Alps driver that pre-dates Windows 8 (ie not later than mid 2012). I've checked my records and the Latitude E6410 had an Alps pad - maybe all the Latitudes of the past few years do.

I've asked on the Dell forum so will see if I have any luck there otherwise I'll have a go at experimenting with drivers. Annoyingly the XPS 1640 has a similar looking touchpad setting panel and it's multitouch with edge scrolling however I've checked and it's synaptics rather than alps.

I'm pleased with the laptop otherwise though as I'd given up hope on getting a small functional laptop with a decent range of ports, touchpad buttons, maintainable and a high res screen it's just weird you can't buy this spec of machine as a normal consumer from their UK site. As I've decided to keep it I'm wanting to order a backlit keyboard, I've checked underneath and there's a small connector alongside the main one so I assume the machine is ready to take a backlit keyboard or is there anything else I need to check?

I saw on the E7450 thread it was suggested the newer high capacity battery would fit the E7440, looking at the chassis for the E7250 and E7240 it looks like their battery bays are also the same so that would be good if I could upgrade the E7240 and have the second as a spare. Guess I'll need to wait and see what compatibility there is for the new battery.

Do you remember how many °C exactly? Full load or idle? What brand/model of thermal paste did you use?
Because on E7240, even it's idle, it's not easy to get below 54°C!

Hello, e7440 after repaste around 40°C on idle, stays there & no fan. Seeing up to 80 with full load (not often I get there). As mentionned, no revolution after repasting, my impression was a few degrees down, and maybe a little quicker to react to cooling when the fan kicks in. Can't give exact numbers. Used Arctic Silver.

Haven't thought about repasting yet, I don't really recall hearing the fan run.

But, this has been the best laptop/ultrabook I've owned to date. Only with they were offered with dedicated graphics (850/860/etc...)

My E7440 (Debian Sid, 3.19.3, A14 bios) has randomly been getting stuck at 800MHz out of resume on AC power. Has anyone else seen this? Unplugging and replugging the AC adapter fixes it... but it shouldn't be happening.

Someone please confirm: I understand that if I order the E7440 with 256GB SSD configurations, I will get the mSATA SSD which is connected to mSATA -> SATA converter and it is installed in the 2.5" bay. I can move and install the mSATA SSD unit to the mSATA slot next to it, then I can install another 2.5" drive (which can be standard 5 or 7mm drive) into the 2.5" bay using HDD caddy.
