I can't tell you if you'll get a mSATA SSD with the E7440, but if you do and it's in the drive bay with the caddy, you can move it over to the miniPCI and use it as the boot drive, then put in a platter drive in the main bay. I believe it's designed for 5mm drives, but I've had no issues using my 7mm 1TB WD in it.

Sadly, my Linux days ended when my R60e bit the dust.

Anyone know if the 54w E7450 battery works in the E7440? I'm thinking of getting the bigger battery and an extra 20w of juice sounds better than 10w.

People have said that the E7450 battery appears to be physically the same but I haven't read of anyone who has tried.

Dell are fairly good at trying to keep inventory management simple, especially for client companies, so I think there's a high probability that the new battery is backwards compatible.

Dell outlet is having a great deal right now on the 7240 and 7440.

coupon code X6RQ3DJHL4LTS3 is suppose to take off $500 when the machine is more than $999. But currently the code is working for any priced machines. Code expire sunday 4/12.

So I picked up a Core i5, 4gb, and 256gb e7240 with low resolution screen for $389+tax. This config isn't available any more, but sometimes it'll come back in stock randomly throughout the day.
I had already ordered a Core i5, 8gb, and 128gb with 1080p touch screen for $609+tax. Then when I called to cancel the order after i ordered the $389 one, the cancellation department offered to credit me back $75 if I keep the order. So it's effectively $534+tax.

Do you guys think it's worth $150 for the touch screen and less storage space? Is there a big impact on battery life with the touch screen?

I saw a youtube video showing that I can use the other msata slot to increase my storage, but the person couldn't close the plastic cover due to the antenna wires. Is there a work around yet for that? I am really looking forward to getting these!

I have mSATA + HDD in mine and everything closes fine. Just have to jimmy the wires out of the way is all.

If you're really worried about it and sure you won't ever use WWAN, you could just snip them.

I wouldn't cut the wires. It would be a hassle to replace them if, in the future you decide you want WWAN.

For a while I had 2 x SSD in my E7440 (1.5TB total storage :D ) and I just folded the WWAN wires out of the way of the mSATA card in the WWAN slot.

Video failing to provide proper guidance. Can confirm folding the wires out of the way is no problem.

I was hoping the 7250 keyboard would work with the 7240 as I was planning to buy a backlit keyboard anyway and wanted a chiclet one but on looking closely at the pictures they're clearly quite different. Hopefully the battery will fit though as plan on getting another anyway to have as a spare.

Thanks John. If you look on Dell's website, at least in the US, the batteries look different with the E7450 battery being taller and less wide. I spoke with Dell support and they said the batteries are not compatible, though I don't discount the possibility they're sticking to the script. I suppose I could buy one and test it out, but even though it's likely I could return it, it's more the hassle than anything else.

From what I've gathered, the picture shown on Dell's website is not correct. I googled Dell's part number and came up with these two batteries.

    E7440 47 Whr - Type 34GKR
    [IMG]

    and E7450 54Whr battery - 3RNFD
    [IMG]

Honestly, they look identical. What I couldn't tell is if they have the same thickness. Maybe the 54 Whr is thicker?
