It does not happen when I use the headset. It feels like sometimes when click on the button there is a power/current surge in the built-in speak and generate that pop sound...then I guess I got a lemon then..

I would start with getting the speakers replaced, followed by the motherboard if that doesn't help.

I had some quiet click/crackle sounds on my E5440, as if the power mangement was enabling/disabling the sound output or something like that.

Updating the Realtek sound card driver seemed to solve it, although now I'm using external speakers connected to my docking station.

I just worked [and typing on it now] on a 5440 of recent vintage with the latest bios - this one has the 4300u, embedded GPU, DVD... There are MANY BIOS options affecting power issues. There is one that will set the fans etc in an unmanaged state, so on full-blast. I did not go hunt all your posts but if the BIOS is not locked down you should review every stinking one of the options. there were IIRC 4 different switches in there just for Processor mgmt. alone, and of course it has unknown option ROMs and embedded management components. I'm hoping the Svc-tag-online sys config notes will identify installed option ROM's. been giving me grief.....
on the table along side this one is the HP 430 G1 and I MUCH prefer it. the Lat is going up for sale

Are you sure? Can you please have another look at the BIOS and note the settings? I'm pretty sure I looked through them all. I'm on the latest "A11" BIOS so some options may have been removed. I've already disabled TurboBoost to reduce heat.

I looked at selling but resale value on eBay is awful! Machine that is still on sale for £750 will only make £250 used.

The whole machine stinks, even accessing the CPU/heatsink means taking it completely apart, including removing the display! No surprise they already replaced this model with the E5450 which looks the same on the outside but completely redesigned inside.

Ugh. The A14 BIOS doesn't completely fix the repeated key issue on Linux, I just got one for the first time.

I have no idea how you got this low of consumption. The lowest I can get on mine with 2 Samsung 841 128gb in RAID 0 is 1.09W. Granted it could be because according to the article HIPM and DIPM cant be used with intel's RST.

Did you change anything with the cpu min/max state? My on demand clock modulation is stuck at 87.5%

I was running on Win 7 Pro on my E7240 before upgrading to Win 8.1 Pro. I can confirm the Active/Passive settings in Win 7 is broken when plugged-in. I thought it was because of the pre-installed Dell Power Manager program over-riding the settings. However, I did not try it when it was on battery.

Been using my E7240 FHD for a few weeks. One annoying issue: the coil whine can be heard. Apparently, Dell does cut corners in electronics.

You mean A14 BIOS? So far, I have no issue with my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Aha! 2 units of 841's? Which means the second 841 is plugged into the second msata which was supposed to be used for WWLAN?

I actually did try that second msata slot and guess what? My power consumption can't get lower than 1W. My guess will be the second msata slot doesn't support HIPM/DIPM mode.

    Well there we go lol.

I will say that the write performance of this setup is atrocious. I dont know if its me or what but I followed a few optimizing guides and I cant break 300MB/s Write, I do hit ~1100MB/s read though. The 256gb evo in my work t440 hits 400s all day with things running in the background.

When I get back from vacation im ordering a 250gb 850 pro for my new 7440 and we shall see how low she goes. =P

Didn't bench, not sure about the performance. BTW, is there any new firmware for 841? Samsung toolkit can't recognize it. :\
I should have bought an E7440 lol. E7240 runs hotter.
