HWiNFO lists an auxiliary sensor in the Dell EC section. Mine is currently sitting at around 20C lower than the CPU.

Have you looked at the logs in the BIOS? Events that cause throttling might merit an entry. It may also be informative to run the hardware diagonistics. Press F12 at the BIOS screen then select the Diagnostic option.

I hope you all enjoy it and consider it to be a fair reflection of the E7440's strengths and weaknesses.

Please feel free to make comments. There was a time when discussion of reviews became very active threads.

And something I would like other E7440 owners to check. A friend who also has the E7440 isn't happy about his power consumption which is about 2W more than mine and it appears that his system is not going into the lower C states. Dell changed his mainboard yesterday but the problem is still there.

Run ThrottleStop (link at bottom of first post of the ThrottleStop Guide and press the C1 button. This is what I get (mains power, Dell power plan):

    Throttlestop_C7_state.jpg CPUz info.jpg

It shows that the CPU is spending a lot of time in C7. Please check whether your E7440 is going into the lower C states and also indicate your mainboard model in case that is significant. Mine is 07F3F4.

Thanks for the review. It's nice to see a new E7440 review since it's been a while since one came out, given that this model is just about a year old now. I notice you didn't mention about flex regarding the keyboard. I think most users including myself experienced the backlit version has some noticeable flex. It's not huge, but it's there. Did you experience that?

My keyboard has no significant flex (I've just checked as I'm typing this).

However, the first time I had the back off the computer I went round checking all the screws and some (including the keyboard screws) weren't completely tight.

I would add, I don't think mine's as quiet as yours and I wish the trackpoint were better, but other than those, it offers a lot of value.

    Hi guys,

I'm thinking about buy e7440 or e6440. I really like e7440 FHD matrix and how cool notebook looks, but I scary about additional graphics card. I like play games from time to time, mostly old titles or indie. So how about heating and cooling when i will play on e7440? someone do that? tested?

Is anyone using contactless smartcards? I have an issue with my E7440 that I don't have with my E7240. Both have identical specs - most specifically the fingerprint reader/contactless smartcard reader. My 7240 recognizes that my card when I enroll it with Dell Data Protection and I can use it to log in no issue. I cannot do the same with my 7440. Even after a rebuild to a new hard drive I still cannot register a smartcard.

One thing I noticed is that on my 7240 there is two devices under Smart card readers in Device Manager - Microsoft Usbccid Smartcard Reader (WUDF) - this is listed twice. On my 7440 there is only one and everything is installed. Nothing missing in device manager.

As far as I know the E7440 only offers the Intel HD 4400 graphics. You can see details at notebookcheck of how it performs in gaming. Under full load the fan in the E7440 becomes quite noticeable if you are in a quiet room but the computer itself stays reasonably cool.

I haven't tried using it but my Windows 7 E7440 says it has a Broadcom Usbccid Smartcard Reader (WUDF). I'm a little puzzled why yours is Microsoft which would imply a software device. Or are you running Windows 8 and it reports the hardware differently?

I read this and watched some gameplays on YT with this graphic card. But I'm not sure about cooling during play.

External monitor should work without problems?

I read a message somewhere else in this forum that the Latitude E7440 suffers from coil whine. Is it really that bad? How loud can the fan be compared to say a Thinkpad X230? I currently own a Thinkpad X230, but I'm thinking about choosing another brand because I'm not so thrilled with the direction that the Thinkpad design is going these days.

I am running 8.1 and I would guess it reports it differently. I did get it fixed.

    cd c:\Program Files\Broadcom Corporation\Broadcom USH Host Components\CV\bin
    ushradiomode64.exe -n

New device showed up, repaired DDP and now I can log in with my contactless smartcard.

Strange that I didn't have to do that on my 7240, I am guessing there is a slight difference in the firmwares on the different touchpads with contactless smartcard readers. I will have to look my my wife's 7440 and see if she has two smartcard readers listed or just one.
