can someone run the hwinfo on an e7440 and tell me what the part number/s for the 1080p matte screen is, I know some alienware 14 came with a compatible 1080 screen (also what's the best screen). Last question is there a higher resolution screen that is compatible with the e7440? Also is there a 1080p or greater that will work on the 12.5 screen. Is the screen connected to e displayport so I have a lot of options?

The panel in my E7440 is AUO113D / B140HAN with Dell Part Number XTRY9. Moninfo's details are below.

Dell also use an LG panel in the E7440 (see above).

Given that Samsung power all their ultrabooks that have U series CPUs with a 40W PSU I thought I'd check out what my E7440 does when connected to Dell's 45W PSU. It would be nice to further reduce the travel weight (although the new 65W PSU with rounded sizes is thinner and lighter than its predecessors).

The result of the test is that the E7440 give a low PSU power warning and the whole system throttles so the CPU runs at 800MHz and everything else seems slow. Running wPrime results in a whole 11W being used from the mains power outlet. Will the E7440 allow the battery to be charged using the 45W PSU? No. Neither when the computer is on or off.

I can understand having the 65W PSU as the standard since that's what many customers will already have but not tweaking the system to work with a lower rated PSU is, in my opinion, either laziness or a serious oversight.

I've been a thinkpad guy for a long time so my Dell knowledge isn't up to date but have you tried it without installing the dell enhancement and power driver? Or is that message a bios message, or just in windows. I can't see windows being able to tell the wattage. Is it possible to disable speedstep in the bios, set it at max performance in the bios then use throttlestop in windows to control the speedsteps?

The PSU detection is programmed into the BIOS. There's a BIOS option to turn off the PSU power rating warning message but there's no way to tell it that 45W is actually enough. There was a similar issue six years ago with my Dell E6400 which throttled when connected to the 65W AC/auto/air adapter in spite that being sold as an option for the notebook. Dell subsequently updated the E6400 BIOS to fix the issue but evidently haven't got round to further tweaking the standard Latitude BIOS to take account of some models using 15W PSUs.

This photo shows the size difference between the new 65W PSU (left) and the old 45W PSU.

Dumb question – does the Dock for the E7440 support connections using DisplayPort (i.e. direct connection from DisplayPort port on Dock to DisplayPort port on external monitor)?

I ask because on the Sales page for the Dock it says “DisplayPort - Only enabled with discrete graphics on current generation of Latitude laptops”, and I as far as I know the E7440 only has integrated graphics.

I guess I was surprised by this as the laptop has a mini-DisplayPort port on it.

    I have E7440, i7, 256GB SSD, Touch.

The dock I was looking at was the Port Replicator: UK/Irish Simple E-Port II with USB 3.0, 130W AC Adapter Port Replicator: UK/Irish Simple E-Port II with USB 3.0, 130W AC Adapter without stand : PC Accessories for Tablets, Laptops & Desktops | Dell UK

    Thanks.

I have the eport replicator (I don't believe the same one you're looking at) I think its model Manufacturer Part# : XX6F0 | Dell Part# : 331-6307 just based off photos on dells site.
It works fine on DP although the port replicator is clearly not designed for this laptop, it works, as the docking connector is the same, but the angle and backing do not fit right. Anyway, my point is, the displayport port works fine, although I am using it with a Dell 2713 monitor over a DP to DVI cable. I can't speak for DP to DP since I don't have a cable.

I'm using docking station with U2414H monitor connected using DP cable.

Working quite ok, only at the beginning the video is flickering.
