I've been waiting for the coupon to order a E7240 to replace my trusty E4200. I want an i5 model (I tried an i7 but the fan ran at full speed all the time, and battery life is important in my use), but most of the ones listed say i5-4200U which is the slightly older/slower chip. I also notice that if I click the i5 checkbox filter on the left, it doesn't show any i5-4300U units at all, like they aren't correct in the outlet database. Does anyone have any info on this? Are outlet laptops frequently mislabeled? Do they really have that many i5-4200U laptops in stock? Any advice is appreciated.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the descriptions but I know the Outlet often carries slightly older models/builds, and since a big coupon sale just ended it makes sense that the current inventory might have a large proportion of these, since the most current models are likely to sell first. When I snagged mine there were a lot of 4300U listed. The inventory changes constantly, you just have to keep checking. It's probably more likely that the filter function isn't working correctly for some reason than that the individual items are mislabeled. If you have doubts you can do an online chat with a sales rep.

Got my e7440 from outlet, out of the box the enter key is broken, so dell replace it with new one, non-backlit version, I can't find any flex at all. The one that driving me crazy is the touchpad, its absolute rubbish, especially the scrolling, other than this touchpad, this is great lmachine.

Did you install the new touchpad drivers released within the last week?

I mentioned this before, but I have a 7440 with a backlit keyboard and if I watch my fingers and stare really hard at the keyboard I can see a slight bit of flex...but I can't feel it. If you are a touch-typist, I think you will be fine.

This machine is too thin for this keyboard to go anywhere!

does anyone know the weights of the e7240 touchscreen vs the e7440 1080 non touch, vs the e7440 touchscreen. Wondering how much weight the touchscreen adds to the machine and the 4 cell vs 3 cell.

Got my refurb E7440 a few days ago. Cosmetically perfect. Spent several hours updating to Windows 8.1. If I push deliberately on the middle keys (backlit keyboard) there is visible flex, but so far it has not been noticeable in ordinary typing. The key action is firm and provides great feedback. According to hwinfo I have the AUO touchscreen; I find it very bright and sharp. I like the trackpad as well. Performance is very snappy and I haven't installed my extra 4GB RAM yet. While churning through Windows updates the fan ran quite a bit but was not loud; when just surfing the web it hardly runs at all. So far this machine appears to be a keeper.

Went to install a stick of RAM in my E7440 and can't get the back cover off. According to the manual the cover is secured only by two screws in the battery compartment and is supposed to lift right off once these are removed. I removed the screws but the cover is holding fast in the middle. It's as though it were glued down there. I slid a plastic card underneath the cover from one side towards the middle, no luck. I'm afraid the cover will crack if I pry at it any harder. Anybody know what might be going on here??

Make sure to remove the SD card filler if you didn't already do so before trying to take the cover off.
