But i have no install media and no Win8 recovery. If i had OEM Win8 image i could make my own disc, but i dont have that.

I also live outside US so can not request install DVD's from Dell directly.

I inspected the recovery partition on the SSD and it has three WIM-files named Factory.wim, Factory2.wim and Factory3.wim. I have'nt figured out how to inspect these WIM-files so that i could see if these are Win7 or Win8 recovery images.

You will need to use imagex and WinPE to restore a WIM directly, so there should be some way to launch recovery from the start-up options.

How were you able to custom configure the machine? Everybody I speak with tells me that it's not available for configuration yet, but will be at some unspecified time in the future. Perhaps they think the US market is too dumb for that?

I used chat to order an e7440 in the US about 3-4 weeks ago and it was fully customized to my desire and the price was significantly less than the preconfigured systems on their site, so not sure why they told you so...

I got a e7440 w/ i5, 8gb ram, 512gb ssd and non-touch FHD display via the outlet store. Generally, I'm very happy with the notebook, but have noticed that notebook is somewhat noisy. And, the noise is not coming from the fan or the speakers. I even verified that by taking off the back cover.

This staticy somewhat high pitched sound nearly sounds almost like a hard drive access. It only occurs when I'm on AC and the battery is fully charged. It's not continuous. It occurs when I launch an application (until it loads). The noise occurs due to higher cpu loads. It is noticeable when I scroll through a web page. The noise seems to originate from behind the memory modules.

    Anyone else have similar experiences?

Maybe you want to grab a screwdriver and remove the undercover and tighten all the screws, especially the ones holding down the cpu heatsink and the fan. Use a good quality one with large tip to avoid stripping the screws.

You can mount any of these images using imagex to see what they contain. Alternatively, have you tried doing a factory restore to see if you get more than one image to choose from with which to do the restore?

Haven't tried Linux but lots of flex/bounce in the centre section of the keyboard I'm finding...not liking it at all

    ...or the vague touchpad
