    Good morning!

The laptop came with an SSD in the 2.5" bay, installed in an interposer. I moved the SSD to the mSATA bay, and installed the hard drive in the 2.5" bay. It's such a snug fit that I didn't secure the hard drive - I simply connected the SATA cable and fitted the rear panel.

Out of boredom I moved the Samsung SM841 512GB SSD that came factory-installed in the 2.5" bay into the empty mSATA slot and the laptop booted without any issues. Interestingly, the AS SSD Benchmark score increased from 822 (427 read and 183 write) to 890 (447 read and 221 write), with the most significant increase in the 4K-64Thrd write followed by read performance. I should note the first run wasn't after a fresh boot while the second was so that could be a factor. Any thoughts?

I NEVER even thought about that! To my understanding this would expose the harddisk to too much vibration and impact from carrying around the laptop... But maybe I am just being too careful.

Thing is to actually get that bracket from Dell is not only almost impossible (I have tried a couple of ways, without luck), but even if they can deliver it, it will almost certainly cost a ridiculous amount of money. So maybe I should just go your route then...

No need to brackets for me either. I had an old intel 330 ssd that I wanted to put in the 2.5" bay. The drive was too thick (9.5mm I think) so I just removed one side of metal casing and then installed it without any screws. The fit is so tight that there is zero movement.

Saundie, were you able to confirm whether this resolves the issue or not? Also, have you checked out this firmware update posted 12/23 for the Synaptics VMM2329 MST Hub:
    Driver Details | Dell US

The list of fixes indicates the following:
"Firmware update to fix flickering screen seen on external monitors attached to dock.

NOTE: For E7440/E7240 only, this update applies when using a dock. If your configuration does not include a dock, the update is not for you and will fail to install"

The MST hub is the displayport chipset. I am on vacation so I can't test this till I get back on 1/6.

Is it possible to configure these with a fingerprint reader and NFC? I don't care for the smart card. This particular combination does not seem to be available.

Hi Ziuck, why is this? Is there a separate NFC module which cannot fit if there is a fingerprint reader? I would prefer to have NFC over smart card functionality, but was hoping I wouldn't have to give up the fingerprint reader. Thanks.

Again thanks guys for your feedback. I successfully built in my WD Blue Slim 1TB. Now I only have the problem that the drive seems to park its head every 8 seconds, after which it needs aprox. 2 seconds to spin up again. That drives me (pun intended) totally insane, but that's another story, I reckon ; )

I want to order the HDD E7440 and upgrade it to SSD, will be getting this Samsung 840 EVO 7mm:
Amazon.com: Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE250BW: Computers & Accessories

has anyone used it to upgrade an E7440 from HDD to SSD? Do I need anything?!

    EDIT:
Reading a lot of replies stating that there is an mSATA bay that would be occupied if the laptop came with WWAN, since mine doesn't, would it be free? can I install the following SSD in addition to the already installed HDD? if it does.. life would be perfect!

To my understanding what you are planning won't be a problem at all. Without a WWAN minicard your mSATA port is free and can be used with an mSATA SSD minicard. The 2,5" bay's HDD has to be removed together with the metal bracket. After that there is enough room for your 7mm SSD.

I am having a docking issue with the 7440s we bought to upgrade 6410s. When docked, the monitors stay blank until windows is loaded, and the docked keyboard doesnt work until then either. We use pre boot passwords, so this is problematic.
