    System Information

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P9700 @ 2.80GHz, 2801 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
    SMBIOS Version: 2,4
    RAM: 4,00 GB

I have the Trend Micro PC-Cillin installed (as so on my other computer (Latitude D620) aswell).

I have the AdBlock Plus installed on my newest version of Firefox.
    I opened the prosess tab, and clicked on the show processes from all users (even though there is only 1 user on the laptop?) and programs that seem to be using CPU is TMBMSRV.exe (2, 4, 1, 2, 4..), sidebar.exe (3, 4, 3, 2 etc), taskmgr.exe (0, 2, 0, 1), SMManager.exe (2, 1, 2, 0...), SfCtlCom.exe (up to 5 and then 0), csrss.exe (0, 1 (sometimes) ), lsass.exe (0, 1, 0), svchost.exe (1, 0, 1, 2, 0..), wmiprvse.exe (0, 1, 2, 1, 0...)

Also, FireFox uses some CPU, but just "normal usage" (5, 0, 3, ...) Depends.

I'd really like to sort out this 'issue', that's one of the things why I joined NBR.com. Other reasons are that I want to learn more about computers, hardware, software etc.

Thanks to everyone who helps me.

You can Google the names of the processes to find out what they are. For example TMBMSRV.exe is part of Trend Micro AV as is also SfCtlCom.exe. The other big resource hog is Windows Sidebar.

My membership of this forum pointed me towards NOD32 as being an effective anti-virus software which has very low resource usage.

I am considering the E6510, as for the whine some people have experienced, I would try removing the HDD and powering on the notebook to see if the noise is still present to deduce if it is from another component.

My freezes are happening randomly. Not resuming from any kind of sleep or hybernation. We notice they seem to happen when accessing network drives or even the internet. Usually its a lockup or Bluescreen. We have three machines doing the same thing. I loaded another one we had and have not had a single issue with it. Power settings to High Performance make no differencde. Only thing I did different was load the drivers in a different order. I did the Chipset first, video, network, then any order after that. Wierd issue. I am on day 4 of the new E6510 and not a single issue. The other three are still having problems.

I've got an i7-620M and no CPU whine. Fan is also quiet even on AC, and also when running intense applications like GTA 4 or Lightroom/Photoshop. Hard drive is reasonably quiet (though I replaced the stock 160GB drive with my own).

Yes, the whine is there all the time. Thanks for your reply.

Are you sure you are able to hear such high frequencies? It's very high pitched. Are you able to hear the whine on Core 2 Duos? The whine on my E6510 has given me a headache every time I've used it and the sound stays with me a LONG time after I turn the laptop off. I never even noticed there was CPU whine on my old Core 2 Duo (which I've been using for 3-4 years) until I began comparing it with this one, so this is much worse. I liked everything else about this computer, so I hate having to return it, but I just have to. If you really have no whine, I guess I was just unlucky...

Also, I was wrong about the fan being a bit loud. It's fairly quiet, even when gaming. Maybe it was something with my settings the first time I tried it.

Well, maybe I am getting old. I am mid-20s right now, but I can still hear the whine of old school CRT TVs. But yeah, it's certainly possible that I just can't hear it. Lucky for me then?

Help... now the one I thought wasn't freezing just Blue Screened. This is 4 machines now all blue screening or Freezing. All the Drivers loaded form Dell's site. All Windows 7 updates installed.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x913441a6). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 072010-17440-01.

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800&MI_01\7&66de6c9&0&0001.

: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Sorry if this has been discussed already but does the E6510 support switchable graphics, or does it use the NVS3100M fulltime?
