I don't know how to do a bug check. Just wanted to share that I also have the freezing problem - on TWO new E6510s I got last week On one of the I have not yet installed any software. On Dell's advice I have upgraded the BIOS on both and reinstalled windows 7 on one - which made no difference. The only thing that seems to work is running in Safe mode which is not much use:mad: This and a few other recent issues with other machines is leading me to believe that Dell is having real Quality issues.

    Hi all

Normally, I don't take time to write in forums, but I am one of the people who have had various laptops (Dell, IBM, Lenovo) some of them having had the "CPU whine" problem. As I find this problem unacceptable working mostly in quiet environments, I know how frustrating it is.

My E6510 arrived a couple of weeks ago and turned out to have the "CPU whine" problem. When the processor went into power saving states, the "whine" was there, but when busy (eg. scrolling a web page up/down) it was quiet.

I tried many of the known workarounds to fix it, but nothing had any effect. Then I suddenly noticed that on my E6510 the "CPU whine" was only there when running on the power supply - not when running on the battery.

I decided to try the power supply I got with an E6400 I also have here - and to my big surprise, the problem disappeared. The laptop is quiet as a mouse, just like it is when running on the battery. The interesting thing is that the model and version number of both power supplies are the same.

I then tried to plug in the power supply from my docking station directly into the laptop. Again, the problem was not there. I then plugged in the power supply I received with the laptop, and bam, the "CPU whine" was back. I can 100% toggle "CPU whine" on and off depending on which of the power supplies I use.

The long and short is, try if you have the "CPU whine" only with the power supply attached, but not when running on battery (actually, the opposite of the fact that normally the "CPU whine" occurs mostly when running on battery). If so, try another power supply, and the problem may be solved.

Hope this helps someone out there - and sorry for the looong story.

Edit: My E6510 spec. is Intel Graphics, FHD display, i7-620M processor (various HD/SDD made no difference).

Thanks for the tip. I tried without the power supply attached and it got better, but the whine was still there from time to time when running Chrome. BTW, my power supply also has a high pitch noise, but it's hardly noticeable when it's hidden under the desk.

The partial BIOS patch P01 is back up on Dell's support site. This time it applied properly. Sadly, it did not restore my 1394 port. Hopefully A02 will do it if and when it's released again. Otherwise my E6510 will have to be shipped back for a motherboard replacement. Does anyone think there's any chance that fresh install of Win 7 could return the IEEE 1394 controller to Device Manager?

If you have free time you can try.. but I would not get my hopes up.
    Your port is probably broken.

Hmmm...Thanks GoodBytes. Sounds like it's probably not even worth waiting for A02. Maybe I should pop for the $89 on-site motherboard replacement. Grrr.

Can you return your laptop... I recommend to return it, and re-order your laptop with 3 year on-site service. WHere you call to order so that you can nagociate a price.

If you can't, then see in upgrading to 3 year on-site service.. because 90$ at every visit its not worth it.

A03 is on the site now.

I've done a clean install and I've had unexplained lockups when just surfing the web with firefox. The other day it locked up three times in 30 minutes. I loaded the new bios today and hopefully it gets better.
