does'nt quite sure A03 fixes freeze problems...
Note: If your system currently has the A01 BIOS installed, you must install the P02 patch before upgrading to this BIOS.

    1. Added support for newer versions of Intel processors.
    2. Updated the PXE option ROM to version 1.3.52.1.
    3. Updated the manageability engine firmware to version 6.1.0.1042.
    4. Added support for Encrypted Hard Drives.
    5. Addressed flash update issue under 64-bit operating systems.

So, I still haven't tried the reinstall of Windows. But, I applied A03 today. Still did not fix the disappeared IEEE 1394 controller. However, I found mention on Dell's support site of the diagnostics utility that you get to by pressing F12 pre-Windows boot.

Once certain tests are performed, this thing allows targeted testing of specific devices, among other things, including the 1394 port/controller. Three tests performed with a "pass" and noted that there wasn't a device plugged in. So I plugged one in and reran the test: again a pass on all three and properly noted that a powered device was attached. (Now why didn't the first Dell tech have me use the diagnostics utility?)

Still, no 1394 controller in the device manager. So now a second tech agreed that a full reinstall of Windows was the only fix since the diagnostics said that the port was fine. My question is: even if it really is Windows that is the problem, how can it be that a fresh install is necessary? I guess I'm just not grasping why it can't be patched or reconfig'd or some such. Any thoughts?

After doing a clean install, I still have one unknown device in the device manager that I can't find drivers for.. "Broadcom USH" something like that. Thought it was for Fingerprint reader, but I don't have one on my laptop.

Anybody know what it is.. ? Thanks :)

I believe that's the fingerprint reader driver. Although you might not have it, it'll show up on device manager anyways.

It's also the TPM chip, which everyone that has the Latitude E series has.

Odd, because I do have the fingerprint reader, and have it activated, but don't see it in Device Manager. I wonder if something's wrong with the Device Manager itself, given my posted problems with the IEEE 1394 controller not appearing as well.

Been a while since I've had to do one of those. But here it is. If I'm missing something, tell me which branch to expand.

Did you close any branch? Because I don't see any device that needs drivers.
And yes you are missing your firewire.

I am comparing ot my E6400, and you have a lot of missing stuff... (E6400 has the same feature and technology than the E6500), but this is the new version so it could explain...
Here is what I have (I don't have bluetooth nor webcam, as for "USB Virtualisation" that is the drivers for XP Mode so that it can use the host system USB devices in XP so ignore it. Finally, as for "Ports" I disable them in the BIOS)

AH I think I know why... In the BIOS, click on "Load defauft" (or something like that) button, then in SATA controller options, make sure it set back to the old settings (right before load default, if you changed it), else you will get a BSOD during Windows boot.
