Hey... asking again... has anyone installed any linux distro on a Latitude E6510? Which one? I have problems with Lucid Lynx getting it to display anything (screen goes black).

Right. That's what I thought. So, what then if it's not?

I'm running Linux (Lucid Lynx) on my e6510.
To make it show anything during installation you have to add "nomodeset" kernel parameter (you can select it by pressing F6 on first menu that appears) - google for 'lucid lynx nvidia" - it's pretty common problem.
Othen than that you have to upgrade alsa to make internal mic working (there is an Alsa upgrade script on ubuntuforums).
Suspend and hibernation doesn't really work for me (doesn't work 90% of the time) and when display turns off because of inactivity I have to switch to text console and back (ctrl+alt+f1 and then ctrl+alt+f7) to make it turn back on.
In general it seems like even on the latest kernel (I'm running 2.6.34) there are some ACPI issues: interrupt 16 seems overloaded (ehci_hcd:usb1, ohci1394, hda_intel, nvidia), already mentioned hibernation and suspend problems and some other strange kernel logs (pcieport 0000:00:1c.1: Failed to receive control of PCIe PME service: ACPI _OSC failed). Dells bluetooth also couses some trouble so I keep it off (in bios) - it makes usb driver complain and the whole computer becomes "choppy". But the thing that bothers me the most is that it seems like psmouse kernel module haven't been updated yet and it detects touchpad and pointstick as ps/2 mouse and not touchpad/pointstick. That means no acceleration controll for touchpad and pointstick and no scrolling (tapping works). Touchpad like that has (for me) too low acceleration - it takes like 4 or 5 full "slides" to get from one end of the screen to another. And I'm not really fan of pointstick but is seems too fast on the other hand.

    Greetings everyone

I just got my E6510 through my work and I was pretty happy for about 45 minutes... with nothing installed my system freezed.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit and the system keeps freezing. I've updated some drivers. Among them AMT HECI 6.1.0.1042, A02 which says "urgent".

But my system keeps freezing over and over. I've runned the diagnostic test over and over and nothing shows up. Sometimes I can work 2 hours on it and sometimes it freeze right after 2 minutes. But during the diagnostic test it was on for about 6 hours until I rebooted to Windows, then after 15 minutes it freezed :p

    Any suggestions?

*Edit* I've read that lowering the ram from 1333 to 1066 helps against this issue. Anyone that could tell me on how to do this?

You better call Dell and have your system replaced. It could be anywhere form a driver issue to faulty hardware.

So Dell tech support had me install all the chipset patches...still no 1394. Might wait to see if A02 bios update fixes it after it's reposted. Otherwise I can try a fresh Win7 x64 install (grrr) or send it in to them (if it's a hardware issue) (grrrrrrrr).

    Anyone else have any ideas?

I have same issue, but not very often, about once or twice a day. I also have 1333mhz ram, but my bios says it's running at 1067, so it should be fine, I think.

Just contacted Microsoft, and their software diagnostics could not detect any problem, except for iTunes, Quicktime, and nWiz(nVidia) causing some problems when they are in 'startup' programs. MS disabled it for now, and asked me to call back with the same case number if I face the freeze problem again. I'll do it, and try to reinstall windows 7. If it doesn't help, then I'm going to call Dell. Replacement is within 21 days, right?

Question about the memory speed issue... IIRC, when the E6510 first came out, Dell wouldn't let you configure 1333MHz RAM with an i5... which made sense since (as I understand it) the i5 Mobile CPUs max out at 1066MHz RAM, so why spend the extra money... but now I see dell.com's only RAM option is 1333 on the i5's. Odd.

Well, when I purchased this, there were both options, and 1333 was actually CHEAPER for an upgrade.
