Did you bang on the memory with the diangnostic tests? Did you upgrade the memory? Are they matched modules?

Was it a bad hard drive sound or just the hard drive seeking like crazy? Did you check the file system integrity?

    Purge your temp Internet files.

    yes, memory tests passed

matched modules bought new, installed, then installed OS

'seeking like CRAZY' was the sound for sure, albeit a loud sound, also sounded like the platter was going to shoot out the side of the lappy for christs sake

    froze the system too.....

Did the drive pass Dell Diagnostics? Have you tried a known good drive?

Any dysfunction can freeze the system. The odd HDD sound and behavior is suggestive. You need more clues... reseat the drive, run the Dell Diagnostics again on it several times, and check the file system. And backup your data.

Try a Linux boot disc to rule out drivers/Windows.

A known good drive will rule out motherboard/SATA controller vs bad HDD that passes diagnostics.

Anyone else having issues with the E6510 not coming out of hibernate properly? Seems like about 1 out of 20 times, the machine will try coming out of hibernate, but gets stuck with a mouse cursor and the swirly black background you see just before the windows login box appears. Sometimes it just takes a reaaaaally long time (like 15 or 20 minutes) before the login box appears, other times I can let it sit overnight and ultimately have to force power off the machine.

    I am running Win 7 Ultimate x64 w/SP1, 8GB RAM.

Is it the OEM installation? When did the problem start?

OEM installation. I'd say the problem has always been there. It was there pre-SP1 and I was hoping SP1 would have fixed it, but no such luck.

Not knowing what else to do, my approach is to doubt the OEM installation and perform a clean install of the OS and current drivers, leaving off anything unnecessary. This usually breathes new life into a system and may very well fix a power state problem that is known to work.
