Call 800-283-2210 (U.S.) and option #4 - 2 - 1 - 1 and punch in your order number. It will give you the most exact production stage (bulild, boxing, etc.) Boxing stage would mean that your laptop is being flown from China to Tennessee - this takes about 3 business days. Unless overnight shipping, your shipping time will depend on where you're located. For instance, NY would take ~2 days, and CA would take ~4 days.

I don't have a Biometric Devices option in my control panel, so I would say no.... In Device Manager I have something called Dell ControlVault w/Fingerprint Sensor. It was not set up to work out of the box, I had to go into Dell Control Panel to enable biometric security, and the procedure was not straightforward, seemed kinda half-azz and not well integrated with Win 7. I had to reboot about 3 times before the login page would show the option to swipe finger for login.

I don't notice any high pitch noise, but then I'm over 40, and word is it's the twentysomethings and under that can hear high frequency, so maybe I'm not a good judge.

Even with an SSD you'll still hear the fan very faintly at idle, but it's not much at all and it's not varying wildly in speed or pitch. It's constant until there's a reasonable load. I was uncompressing some ISO's, had 4 cores running about 50% across the board, and the fan kicked up a notch and even that was not bothersome.

If you're familiar with the Vostro 1520, the fan on this is nowhere near as loud, out of control, or annoying as that.

What's that number? I dialed it and it had some odd automated answer saying I should press * on my phone and that if I signed up for the service it would cost $9. Is that what one has to pay in order to get info?

I searched Dell's contact info for their automated status number, but it only gave me the same info that I can pull up on their website.

This is my first time posting. I ordered my 6510 on April 28 and it is in production and has an estimated shipping date of May 17. Sure would like to get it sooner. For anyone interested, my machine's specs (optional) are:

    1 317-3587 Intel Core i7-720M Quad Core 1.60GHz 6MB for M6510
    1 317-3592 8.0GB, DDR3-1333 SDRAM, 2 DIMM for Latitude
    1 342-0479 250GB Hard Drive 9.5MM,7200RPM, Dell Latitude E
1 330-7389 Internal Swipe Fingerprint Reader and Contactless Smartcard Reader for Latitude E6510
    1 320-8809 15.6" HD (1366 x 768) Anti-Glare LED Display for Latitude E6510
    1 468-7556 Genuine Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, w/ media, Latitude, English
1 313-9913 Slate Silver, Mobile Broadband Ready, Dell Latitude E6510
1 430-3659 Dell Wireless 375 Bluetooth Module, Dell Latitude E

I'm terribly sorry, it's 800-283-2210 (Dell Financial Services, US only, where you can check order status as well)

Thanks much for that! Apparently my machine is in production "in the build stage", which is not terribly new. But it did say that it was scheduled to ship on May 12, five days earlier than the website tells me. So that's hugely helpful, at least for my psyche and my tendency to champ at the bit waiting for something to replace my currently five-year-old ThinkPad R52 (which I sadly never liked from the beginning). So, thanks again for that dial-in info. No way I would've found it on my own, especially the way to get through the prompts which are otherwise not at all intuitive.

It will be more helpful once your system moves to boxing stage. Just remember that the machine tells you "ship date" whereas the website is talking about "delivery date."
Ship date will never change until it actually ships out, so after you hear in which stage your laptop is, you can just hang up.

Yes. I'm not quite sure where it's coming from, but it's definitely emanating from the laptop.

Speaking of noises, I noticed a new high pitched whining noise last night and cocked my head to see where it was coming from... and it was the power brick! So I touched it to rotate it and I almost burned by hand. I didn't have an IR thermometer handy, but it was HOTTTTT. Has anyone else noticed their power brick getting extremely hot? FYI I have the i7-720QM.

Thanks again. That's an important distinction you're making which I hadn't picked up on. Either way, thanks much for the phone number.

Your PSU is faulty, I believe. It's a 90W Power Supply, it should not be that hot.
And, all Intel's power management circuit on the motherboard since the first generation Intel Core 2 Duo, produces this high pitch noise. If you go full power, or you have a program that uses the CPU, then it disappears.
Intel is now known to have bad hearing (I think they should start hiring younger people, lol). Anyway, there is nothing you can do about it other than live with it, or go with system powered by AMD CPU's.

They are workaround to the problem. Like I said you can have a processes that uses 1-2% of the CPU every few seconds, to hide the problem, or turn on your blue-tooth card.
