I've been using the 1tb Home Edition on eSATA for a year now and it's fine. I had some connection issues which were mainly my own fault because is disconnected the drive while i had files in use that were on the external.
The first time you connect it you'll have to import or activate it through harddisk management, after that it should load automatically.

Alternativly you could get a DeLOCK 2,5" enclosure (around €18,-) with power over eSATA connection. That can take up too 500gb if i'm correct and you don't need a power adapter fr as it get's that from the eSATA/USB combo port. Great for an "on the road" speedy external drive. I'm putting my old HDD in there and just upgraded my internal drive.

If you want to travel light and use eSATA then you can't go much better than this cable. It plugs directly into a 2.5" SATa HDD/SSD and provides power from the combo port. I've got three and one lives in my computer bag with a 250GB HDD.

That uses two ports though iso just the eSATA/USB combo and i'd rather have my HDD in a full case. Good solution if you have more than one but then again, i'd still put them in a case and not just a bit of rubber.

    edit:
I see you can use just one plug but that way you won't have eSATA speeds but simply USB rates, correct?

This doesn't actually transfer data through the eSATA port? The description says that there are two USB heads on the laptop end of the cable?

I've still kind of been looking for something like this, though. Where can I get one in the US?

The DeLock enclosure is almost just as simple, just slide the HDD out and that does work through eSATA.

btw. did anyone see the new Intel Storage technology 9.6? I installed it and it updated the AHCI SATA driver to 9.6 and installed an app that (i think) replaces IMSM. Latency is decent running these, as low or lower than before (on both laptops)

Thanks Veritas and John. I will try that tonight when I get home. I am hopeful that it's the flash problem, as FF seems to be fine when I first load it and though I haven't tracked it each time, the high CPU usage [when I go to resource monitor, the firefox usage is over 50!] seems to arise with multiple tabs opened for some time....

It's only one plug which fits the combo port. Data transfer rates is at SATA speed and power is from the USB contacts in the port.

Visit Newmodeus. However, they seem to have discontinued the rubber enclosure.

    I attach a photo of my set-up.

So the picture/description on that eBay posting is wrong?

I'm actually looking for the thing with the dual USB ports... I just want something to quick test SATA drives without having to stuff them in an enclosure, etc.

I've looked a bit harder at that current ebay listing and it is different to what I bought a few months back. I assume that a few people had the problem if insufficient power from the combo port so they added an extra USB plug.

For people who want to quickly connect bare drives to the eSATA /USB combo port then either this or the newmodeus cable will work fine.
