At least for me the A17 brought relief - I have watched youtube HQ videos for at least 30min now - no mad blowing, the temp stays between 33-37C (according to 'Core Temp 0.99.5').

Before that (on A15 and earlier), after 5min on youtube or other flash video, it went berserk.

    EDIT:

    My testing tonight, an overview:

    1) Watching one HQ youtube video at a time, tried about 7 different with no brakes between. Temp stayed 33-37C, I could hear the vent but it stayed at acceptable level.
    2) Watching 6 HQ youtube videos simultaneously, it took about a minute, temp went to about 55C and the blowing started.

    So, my conlusion:
Dell has done something - it takes a lot more than one single flash video to make it throttle.
Dell hasn't got it right all the way, 50C is still too low to start vent at full speed.

I'm looking forward to hearing from other E6400 users. How is A17 working for You?

Install the latest IDT drivers form Windows 7 driver page from Dell for this laptop. Once done, open the control panel, and open the IDT sound control panel. Once in, look on the side column for SRS Sound, and form there you can adjust the sound to add more base. You also have an equalizer to play with.

Don't forget to increase the output sound quality from the sound panel.
To do this, open the SOUND panel from Windows in the Control Panel (Start > type in: Sound, and hit Enter). Double click on the speaker source, then on the panel that just open, go to the Advance Tab. From there, select form the drop down box, "24-bit 192000Hz (Studio Quality)", and hit apply. Make to close your music/video player first.

I called dell yesterday - they sent out a copy of vista which I received this afternoon (have to say their business support is much better than consumer).

I'm installing it on my SSD right now. Is there a list of bare essential dell aps I need to put on after a clean install?

When I was trying out the laptop, I set up some a password for who knows what (my first time using vista). Now it's asking me to enter the password every time I boot which is annoying. I know the password, I just hate having to enter it. How can I get this thing to stop asking me for a password every time I boot?

You mean when the computer boots up, or after Windows finishes loading and asks you to log in?

Either way, you just need to remove the password.

If it is BIOS password, go into the BIOS and choose to set up a new password. Leave the new password field blank.

For the Windows password, log in and go to the control panel's user accounts menu. There will be an option to remove the password.

    Hi everyone :) ,

I am considering to purchase a E6400 with P processor and discrete graphic. I intend to use it without the dock. I have been reading reviews and posts, but I still have just two doubts:

1-) I travel a lot to tropical countries like Brazil and India, so how does a brand new E6400 (P processor + discrete graphic) deals with heat? I have been reading confusing posts about heat issues.

2-) I am addicted to trackpoint (I really don't care about touchpad). So, how is the trackpoint of the E6400? Good? Easy to use?

    Thanks a lot!

Well off the dock and in 35oC tempatures is has dealt with the heat fine in my experiance. But that said I do not stress mine out too much, I do not game on it, and mainly use M$ Office and I am very impressed with the wireless range, using the same router at home, my wifes laptop has no where near the range as the E6400.

The E6400 can handle the heat well if undocked. The first trip mine (with Intel graphics) made included working in an office with 35C temperature. I found that temperature very unpleasant but the E6400 didn't notice.
