let me rephrase :: it certainly SHOULD work :) -- does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

edit:: ive done a clean install, and still it doesn't work. looks like a hardware problem? if anyone has any ideas of how it might be a software issue though, do let me know asap. (my brother leaves for china in 2 days)

Hi - does anyone here know if this and this supports audio over HDMI? I think it should but I'm not 100% sure.

    Thanks

Have you checked out the one at monoprice.com?

I can guarantee that one carries audio through hdmi.

    Help with clean install from Win7 64 RC1 to Win7 pro 64.

I am new to this forum. But first off, thanks so much for all the excellent info, I have learned a great deal already. I got this computer for my daughter for college. I really like the clean and robustness of the business Latitudes (my other daughter got a D630 a few years ago)

    I have a few questions;
    1) is this the best thread to get help with E6400 new clean install of Win7 Pro 64?

    2) regarding the Win7 clean install. I am currently running RC1 7100, it was clean installed back in July when the E6400 emerged from the box. I am looking for the best way to insure the most stable system after the new clean install.

2a) what if anything needs to be done with the TPM and the security software, for fingerprint reader and the other TPM pass word, before and after a new clean install?

2b) what is the minimum Dell software that needs to be installed; to enable things like; the WiFi finder, the finger print reader, light sensor, back-lit keyboard .... ? Currently it seems that the WiFi is a little unstable (hard and slow to connect and some issues with dropping), I wonder if this is due to Windows WiFi conflicting with the Dell DCP software?

2c) is there a recommendation for exporting all settings prior to the new clean install?

2d) I am planning to use my Win7 Pro media from Microsoft and the key I got with the Dell Win7 Pro upgrade media. Is this a good idea? Because I currently have W7 RC1 on the system I am doubtful that the Dell upgrade media will work correctly.

suggestions welcome, thanks for your help

    1. There's a Windows 7 on the E6400 thread.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=340840

2a. I would enable TPM before installation of Windows.
2b. I think the WiFi finder would require Dell's Control Point Connection manager. Use of the fingerprint reader requires Dell's Security Manager. Light sensor and back-lit keyboard works without software but Dell Control Point allows you to adjust the settings. I have the Intel 5300 wireless card and use the drivers that come with Windows 7. No problems here but I don't use the Dell Connection Manager.
2c. Not sure what settings you are referring to.
2d. Not sure if this will work. If it doesn't, you can always install with the Dell Upgrade media, use Activation Backup Restore to grab the "license"/activation. Install with your Microsoft media and use Activation Backup Restore to restore the "license"/activation.

if you do a clean install, the upgrade key may not work (i can at least tell you that the upgrade key that you can buy from MS does not work -- not 100% sure about dell.) there is a way around this problem, but since it allows the use of the upgrade key without a full license, im not sure i can post it on the forum. search for "Clean Install Windows 7 With Upgrade Media and Product Key on Formatted or Empty Blank Hard Drive" for instructions.

edit -- http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/...t-key-on-formatted-or-empty-blank-hard-drive/ - don't use it unless you have the license rights.

Although I am not the admin, you can post it here Veritas, it is the users responsibility to ensure that he conforms to the EULA. He said he got the upgrade and previous version of Windows (it comes with every laptop build - and the Latitude series only has Windows, so it can't be Linux). Also, the instructions and workaround are given and done on purpose to be there (hanse why it only works with Win7 and not Vista upgrade) by Microsoft themselves, this is no hack.

    Do Method #2 here:

    Hi

I have finally ordered my E6400:

    Core 2 Duo P9700
    Win7 Pro 64 bit
    8GB RAM
    Backlit Keyboard
    HDD 250 GB 7200 RPM
    Intel WiFi Link 5300
    Touchpad with fingerprint reader
Internal Dell Wireless 5530 GSM card
    Bluetooth
    9cell battery
    GPU Nvidia Quadro
    Integrated 2MP camera
    WXGA+ Display
3yrs NBD warranty with CC Accidental

The price at ~2000$ (after substracting taxes) is outrageous :), but I plan to work it hard for the entire 3 yrs of the warranty and it should be fast till the happy end.

I decided to buy 8 GB because I've found that it is already hard to buy 4GB DDR2 chips - DDR3 is coming like a wind. There is a possibility that it won't be possible to upgrade from my initial conf. (2x2 GB), at least cheap (I suppose Dell will still offer them, but their quoted price is surreal). And I've got a decent deal on that 8 GB.

It should be here in sth. between 7 and 14 days, I can't wait :)
