    Hi guys:

I'm writing as my Dell E6400's XP failed and I had to format it and reinstall XP. I was able to get the drivers for the WLAN card and sound from Dell but I can't get the webcam driver to install, it always fails giving me "An Error Occurred While Setting Up The Drive" error. I read here that the drivers that came in the laptop's CD are needed, but I don't have the slightest clue of where that CD could be. Could anyone share somehow that to me or show me how to get the webcam and bluetooth drivers to work?

    Thanks in advance.

You should not specifically need the drivers from the CD... the ones on the website should be the same, if not newer revisions. Have you tried installing the drivers manually, ie by updating drivers in device manager and pointing it to the appropriate inf file? You can also try to see if they have older revisions of the driver and if those work.

More importantly you do know that Microsoft is dropping support for Windows XP in April right?

Support is ending for Windows XP - Microsoft Windows

I would highly recommend upgrading to Windows 7 or Vista. If you can't afford those or don't have a spare license, Linux should run just fine on an E6400.

I tried with all the versions I could find on Dell's site, but all of them gave me the same error as noted before. Regarding the first question, how can I find the webcam in the device manager? I mean, where should it be? Under which category? Under USB?

Right click on the unknown device. go to properties.

    now select the details tab

on the drop down list select hardware id's

copy what you see there and google it. It should take you to the driver you need.

Sorry for the delay but I just figured out the undetected device that showed up was my phone, as I hadn't installed the MTP drivers when I sent the screenshot. I don't have any undetected hardware whatsoever now. Does anyone know how can I find the webcam in the device manager? I mean, where should it be? Under which category?

For Linux users: 2 days ago I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to new 14.04 version and good news: Overall performance increased, integrated graphics automatically recognized (Intel GM, I don't have dedicated card model). It's definetely worth upgrading, as for 14.04 everything seems to work well "out of box".

How much faster is Ubuntu compared to 8.1 on the E6400? Is it faster enough to ditch 8.1?

For clean installs I don't think it will be significantly faster. Especially if you have an SSD, I don't think you'll notice the difference.

What ever happened to the throttling thing? My E6400 throttles and it's insanely annoying when I need it to perform correctly.

Also, where can I buy a replacement battery?

    Thanks!
