for a caddy, make sure you get one that has the ejector button. They can be had for about $10. I think the one below has the ejector, but I'm not sure.

Also, t9900 are the the best official CPUs for this model, but someone on this forum has reported success with an extreme edition.

t9900 (3.06Ghz) go for around $100+ on ebay, if you can live with 206Mhz less of a CPU, you can pick up a t9600 (2.80Ghz) for less than half the cost, about $40.

You don't need to change the heatsink. T9600 is indeed a much better value if you don't have to have the best one.

I am running Samsung 830 128gb in my E6400. Makes programs loading times a lot snappier. There is a new version out, the 840, you should look into that.

Also got this caddy for my 250gb hdd when I put the ssd as the main drive. It does not have the pull out mechanism and I tapped the one from my optical drive on it. It matches the color and contour of latitude E6400 perfectly.

I concur on the Samsung. Samsung is generally pretty reliable and the 830 and 840 are both generally good values, even from what I've seen at retail.

Is there any benefit with going with a current generation Samsung SSD cost wise? These originally came with PM800 series didn't they? Will the current generation controllers be compatible?

EDIT: Depending your I/O requirements, you may or may not get a better price/performance ratio with the newer drives. Really depends on a lot of factors. Compatibility shouldn't be an issue, though.

So still with the latest bios, the Quad core Q series is not an option?

Didn't work with BIOS 20-something when I tried it, so I doubt it will work now. Q9000s are cheap though, so you can always try it if you want to confirm!
