Last weekend I found a strange issue with my E6400 I was hoping someone could help me with.

I have a file server in my home and usually when transferring large files I hook up through the LAN to speed up the process. Well when I was doing this the transfer was very long. I checked the status of my LAN adapter and it was stating that it was transferring at 10mbps. My home is setup in a gig network so this is very strange.

I tried different cables all with the same result. I discovered that it is the machine not my network since if i hook up another laptop it is happy as a clam.

I popped in a spare drive and loaded up windows just to test and walla shows it at transferring at a gig.

Anyone have an idea why on this install of windows it is showing it at 10mbps?

Have you looked at the network adaptor settings? (Device Manager > Network Adaptors > <Your adaptor> > Properties > Advanced). The link speed is normally set to Auto Negotiate.

I can not say that I have looked there. After doing a couple of those tests I felt stumped so I gave up for the night.

I will check that when I get home, I would hate to have to wipe out the machine and redo it for a silly issue.

Good to know, your frequent HDD access issue has been resolved after the backup.

I just was able to check this and it is set to auto negotiate. Should I just switch it to 1gbps?

The auto setting should work fine but it would be worthwhile trying the 1gbps setting to see if it works. I was wondering if the link had been fixed at a lower speed.

For those of you with a E-Port dock, does your computer freeze when you hot dock/undock? Lately mine completely freezes when I try to hot dock and I have to do a hard reboot. It just started happening more frequently recently. I'm wondering if I should call Dell support. I'm running Windows 7 x64.

I would give them a call, I run mine with the dock and have no issues.

John I went ahead and made that setting change and what do you know back to full speed. Not sure why it is doing that but as long as it works I am happy :)
