    Great news,

I tried the reinstall of the intel sata driver and software files found on the driver dvd that accompanied the notebook. Running Nero 9 I am finally able to burn a cd on Vista 64 bit. I had downloaded the driver files from dell but decided to follow JBrown01's idea and use the issued dvd. Don't know exactly why, but it works for now. Probably like updates from MS. Some work and well, some are disasters in the making.

Has anyone successfully burned a dual-layer DVD?

After upgrading the Intel Matrix Storage Manager as suggested in the above postings (thanks!), I am now able to successfully burn single-layer DVD's using either Nero 7 or the Dell Edition Roxio software bundled with the E6400. However, I cannot burn dual-layer DVD's. Not even just 1 GB worth of data on a dual-layer disc. Doesn't work in Nero 7 or Roxio.

I have used Imation and Verbatim 2.4X dual-layer DVD's that burn fine on various desktop computers.

I am running Windows XP SP3. The OS was installed on the laptop when I got it--it's not an image.

Dell is shipping a replacement drive, and I will see if that helps. Since this thread has been inactive, maybe everyone else's DVD problems have been solved?

Anyhow, I was wondering if any of you tried a dual-layer disc?

    Thanks for any help.

I don't think I have tried dual layer with this burner. I know, from past experience, that dual layer and notebook burners often don't get on well together.

Use DVD Identifier to find out the media code and what burn speeds are supported.

Thanks for the tip, John! I appreciate your quick response and other suggestions on other topics.

I got a replacement DVD burner today. I am actually able to successfully burn dual-layer DVDs now! I did not expect this would solve the problem, but it did. Happy Friday. Maybe the replacement drive was "broken in". LOL!

For anyone in the future that is troubleshooting burning dual-layer DVDs, the drive in my E6400 is a TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-U633A. The drive works with 2.4x DVD+R DL media.

Is the TS-U633A the new burner? What was the old one?

    John

PS: I see that Dell have added firmware A02 for the Panasonic UJ-862A to the list of E6400 downloads.

Both the old and new burners are TS-U633A.

It is good to know that new firmware is available for a Panasonic UJ-862A burner. If I have other burner problems, I could suggest trying the Panasonic burner with its latest firmware. Others may find the info useful too.

The TS-U633A burner seems to be working OK for me now, even with dual-layer discs. I can burn single and dual layer DVDs OK now.

Off topic (probably): I have been having some other BSODs that started since I swapped burners. But, I am not saying the burner is the cause. I started using an E-port plus. Some networking changes were made. I updated the Intel Matrix Storage Manager a few days earlier. I will ask my IT person to help with this issue, and if it's burner-related I will add to this thread.

    thanks for the help!

Look around the forums and you will see that the latest version of the Matrix Storage Manager from the Intel site has caused problems. I suggest you go back to the previous version.

Thanks for the advice on the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. My IT guy updated two other drivers and thinks the problem will be solved. One driver was for the mouse and the other one was an IEEE??? controller. If those things help, I will get him to detail what he did and will post it in case it could help someone else. On the other hand, as soon as the next BSOD occurs, I will install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager from the DVD as you suggest. I will also look around on the forums to see what the other problems are, as you suggested.
    Thanks a bunch!

    hi all

i have a Dell precision m4400 laptop but i saw this Latitude post and thought somebody might be able to help me out? My m4400 has the same TS-U633A burner in it as well and i want to find out what DVD media discs people have been using in theirs with success. I want to buy 50-100 bulk dvd discs so dont want to make a mistake and find out ive got lots of dvds as coffee coasters!! any thoughts on Datawrite single layer ones?
Which discs are better with the TS-U633A drive, the DVD+ or DVD- discs??
Thanks in advance for any help its much appreciate and will probably save me money!

Use DVD Identifier (link above) to see the media code.

The problem with using a name such as Datawrite is that different batches can use different dyes (and Datawrite use other people's dyes) and few suppliers actually tell you what dye is being used in their current products.
