I burnt another DVD and CD, both worked flawlessly.

I've only burnt a handful of 4X DVDs and 24x CDs, but no problems so far, I do have A05 BIOS and the Matrix Storage 8.5 drivers/app loaded.

Yes, I've been happily running the newer Intel version instead of the older Dell version, but rather than downloading it from some "random" site, I'd recommend people go straight to the horse's mouth

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101&lang=eng

I've also been using the newer Intel version of the Display drivers too, but the Intel version won't install over the top of the Dell version, also the Intel v12.1.x.y of the WiFi drivers/app

I burnt 6 DVDs of 3 different media types during the past two days. One failed on verification but I then noticed there was some dirt on the surface, which I suspect was the problem.

So the problems I originally encountered appear to have gone away.

My problem is not being able to burn CD's or DVD's using Vista 64 bit Ultimate on my E6500. Dell swapped the drive unit and there is no change. Funny thing is using Vista 32 bit, all is well. I have tried using both the included Roxio and my purchased Nero 9 as well as the Windows burn software. Nothing works with 64 bit. Firmware has to be the answer, though nothing from Lite-On. Any ideas?

Yeah, I order my E6500 with Vista Ultimate 32 bit. All works well there, but install Vista Ultimate 64 bit and the CD/DVD burner will not work. Dell replaced the unit but I continue to get the same errors on attempting to burn a disk.

Firmware and the OS driver are two completely different things, firmware is the code run inside the drive, has nothing to do with what OS you are using (32/64bit). If your burner works on Vista 32 bit but not on 64, then it has to be a software compatibility problem or a driver problem (unlikely).
