Hey, I'm back. I did as neotechpc advised : I phoned, this time saying I was a small corporate. But as I asked for the discrete graphics version (840m) of the 7450, THEY ANSWERED THEY ARE NOT AWARE of that possibility.

I'm in France here, ok. But I remember one guy here ordered from Dell Spain and got the 840m.... **** !

So I have 2 new questions, for everybody here having the discrete graphics version of the 7450 : from which country did your order ? Did you ask specifically for the 840m or were just lucky ?

    Thank you.

I received my 7450 a few days ago. I have the touch screen version and the display is way too bright, to the point it's extremely uncomfortable. I have to dim it below 50% to get it a point where it doesn't hurt my eyes. I'm coming from an E6220 and I have to say the 7450 is much brighter than the 6220.

I do notice some light bleed around the bottom right of the "dell" logo (above the F10/11/12/printscreen keys). It's only noticeable during boot up and on really dark backgrounds (i.e. watching a movie) with the back light turned up to 100%. At my comfortable setting (slightly below 50%) the bleed is pretty much gone.

I installed a 1TB Samsung 850 Evo SSD and so far everything has been working great! I'm patiently waiting for a M.2 2242 SSD of at lest 512 gb to be released so I can add one (I run several VM's on it as it's my primary dev/test workstation).

So one thing to note from my order is that it does not say 'GeForce' or 'NVidia' anywhere on it.

338-BFKC Intel Core i7-5600U Processor Base, Discrete Graphics, Smart card Reader, E-Dock

Seems to be the key part number...

In fact, the model number provided by resellers is usually of the form 7450-XXXX , XXXX being a 4 digit version identifier. Can you read something similar on you cardboard box ?

    Thx

I must admit I have the same experience. My screen (1080p matte non-touch) is exceedingly bright. I still haven't run into a situation where I have had the brightness much above 50%. It sounds like those of you with dim screens may have defective units or something, unfortunately.

So you'd say it's a good and bright screen for an everyday companion or does this lead into frustration sometimes?

@Lobo1 : Any plan to ask for a replacement based on the failling screen ? It seems you are not alone, so you could join forces.

One question regarding OS install: I received my 7450 win7 installed on it and got an 8.1 DVD. I plan to
    1. replace the SSD to a bigger one (=no access to any backup/reserve etc partition that may hold the 8.1 key)
    2. use a vanilla iso from M$ with all updates released to day (=no acces to any keys on the facroty 8.1 media)

So the question is, where is the 8.1 key? If it's in the BIOS I should be fine, if it's in the factory DVD or SSD I have to dig it out somehow.
